Ok, as I was sitting on the throne before going off to beddy bye.....it all fell into place.....oh sheesh....I know I'll hear about that....
Anyway, here is all it needs to be:
a) a "locked" spreadsheet file that is read only so they can't screw it up.
b) the file has to be able to have the name and student id number fields locked so that the grade portion slides under the name. The end produces a percentage and a letter grade as defined by the teacher.
c) There should be a "tutorial" on how to make graphs of the student grades locked into the thing because most teachers(I know....it's sad...can't make a graph in a spreadsheet)....
d) There should be another locked sheet for absences and tardies with a simple total at the end.
e) because digicam works so well, a "table" or "grid" that would automatically take uploaded pictures of students that were "sequentially" arranged in the camera, The grid should have a way to type names under the pictures and later have the pictures editable.
e) i) it would be really nice if there was a way to just click on the picture of the student and another table or "grid" of "seats" and the picture go over there, or I guess just cut and paste, but the grids should be vieweable side by side on the desktop.
f) a set of templates in OO for the teacher to send praise/concern/fail notices home, again, that would be able to be placed on the desktop side by side with the grade spreadsheet or the attendance sheet so the teacher can just scan the grades, type in a name, etc. and save then batch print later.
And folks, that is just about it for the "stand alone" teacher.....
An "up and coming" item that could be provided as a template would be the "rubric" that a teacher fills in about how something is going to be graded.
Another "up and coming" item would be a template for a vertically integrated "curriculum" in a department. Most stand alone teachers at the high school have to "write up" a complete curriculum to meet state standards nowadays...this is just plain tedious, teachers take whole classes on this junk..if there were some standardized templates the teacher could just customize them and then let the state folks come back and criticize and etc. etc. but most teachers have no idea about how to "write down" in some "form" what they "do" on a daily basis...it's a kind of "coding" "decoding" thing...
So.....any big picture ideas?
What I envision is a Xandros Education cd, whatever the desktop looks like that has another section locked on the desktop, that cannot move... that contains these items....
That way the teacher who has only used windows or has fighting and screaming been told to use the computer in the room...or just wants to try it out but thinks they might break something would feel like they couldn't break anything...
The fundamental paradigm shift here is not a "grading/attendance/seating" "program" but a complete OS that has been "tweaked" for this.....
Now, in actuality that is what is being attempted in some states, they are attempting to make vertically integrated systems that use Windows as an end terminal and it sometimes works and sometimes not....
But, remember that Apple got it's foot in the door by almost giving away the computers to the schools, giving totally free ones to the principals and reducing the prices to the students.......
Wellllll this is just a cd for a teacher....
provide a nice booklet on how to dual boot....
ain't xandros great1

As you install updates or new applications or application updates using Xandros Networks, any packages that need interactive configuration display messages in the update window, and provide a text area at the bottom of the window where you can enter your selections. This much nice is Xandros and what you complain in your post ?
Regards

Hi woodsmoke,
check out http://moodle.org/ for . ..
"Moodle is a course management system (CMS) - a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities. "
This might do some of what you want.
Looks pretty interesting. |

Hi ackray
thanks for the link...
I've looked at moodle before, and never been able to really get my mind around what it does...
and, one of the other things is just the name...
I know that the above sounds strange, but sometimes such a simple thing gets something left in the dust....
.......
Ya know, your post got me off dead center on this thing...I'm gonna download it tomorrow and fiddle with it...
thanks..
aIN"T XAndros GrEAT!

Hey wodsmoke,
From what I saw moodle is a package that allows you to create an intranet for your school.
To get a feel for it play around on the site demo. They have a long list of moodle sites around the world too that you can check out.
The advantage of a package like this is that non technical people can run and maintain their own web site. So you would need to set up a web server box that will support mysql and php. Then load in the modle package.
I'm not to crazy about th name either. Apparently it is an acronym so I guess we can always refer to it as “Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment”
Have fun and let me know if it works for you. |

Hmmmm indeed. guess I heard this idea before.
Do you really think there is a need for another educational version, woodsmoke? And are you planning to get involved in the development of Xandros-edu then?
Cheers

I was go on http://www.oooforum.org/ and searched for more about let's talk and online discussion and got
http://www.theenglishforum.com/beta/forum
While I didn't find what you wanted (quick glance), I'm sure it is
possible to lock the database. Maybe you can ask the Oo geeks in
their forums. _________________ [ur=http://www.theenglishforum.com/beta/forum]Online Debate Forum[/url]
