Although I've studied X4.5 at
http://forum.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?p=220335&sid=9f4372bea2fc1730e1f0814ebb7fa509 and http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=30583, I missed the boat when I last visited geek connection. But RevLinuxOS might be 100x better.

Do you know of any other linux flavors that provide the ease of working with NTFS partitions like Xandros? When I googled, "linux systems that work with NTFS partitions," I found "How to mount partition with ntfs file system and read write access," but that's difficult and is time consuming. That's the main reason I can't part with Xandros; it appeals to windoze trogs like me.

At the moment, I am using X4.2 (broken, in need of reinstall or replacement) in dual boot with WinXP Pro. Thanks in advance.

I thought NTFS support was pretty much standard in modern distros. No?

I don't have a clue - because I have yet to try any other linux flavours. I've been looking at PCLinuxOS among a few others, but none of them mention NTFS support. Xandros staff/marketing was very good with their detailed descriptions. Maybe other linux support staff are too embarrassed to mention it?

Most new distributions includes NTFS3G (write support).

The official Xandros Desktop 4.5 OCE DVD didnt include
commercial NTFS write support. It was fixed with NTFS3G
in the updated 4.5 OCE CD version, where NTFS partitions
are now mounted automatically.

A friend on another forum says Ubuntu will read and write NTFS partitions, but you have to tweak it to make it automount them.

Truth be told, I'm not sure which would be better between PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu. I would still like to have a linux/windoze dual boot system, but I have no idea which one would provide the ease of doing that.

I hate to say it, but I figure I'm going to have to lay Xandros to rest because it's too easy to break - as easy to break as it is to set up a dual boot. It's broken now, because I tried to get an app to replace a Win app.

At the moment, I'm focused on setting up a dual boot between PCLinuxOS and WinXP on a new WD 1TB SATA HD, but I'm always open to ideas.

A friend on another forum says he runs Ubuntu and OpenSuse, and both will read, write, and automount NTFS partitions.

Thanks, Jim. obviously the linux world has been speeding along as I stayed stuck in the slow lane with blinders on. A guy on another forum told me that I should try as many flavors as possible on the same home directory to find out which one suits me. I wish I could do that at a local frys, but I can only find windose on their PCs.

At this point, I would be satisfied with an idiot proof OS that doesn't break.
