I set up an old PC with Xandros 4.5 and a Rosewill wireless network card (Ralink chipset) for an indigent family. Their neighbor agreed to let them piggy-back off their wireless router. Had it all working. Xandros 4.5 automagically detected and configured the wireless card with the proper driver, entered the WEP key, and connected to the internet - a breeze!
Then after two weeks, I got a call that they could no longer connect to the internet. I went over, went through control center and network connections, and can't figure out what's not working. From reading the messages during an attempt to connect to the network, it's communicating with the wireless router, it's requesting and getting an IP address from the router. But at the end I get the message "connection failed". The signal strength meter shows 100%, and claims packets being received and sent. But I can't get a connection to the internet.
My Windows laptop connects to the wireless network with no problems with the same WEP key.
Anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting? Is this a hardware problem with the network card? Thinking about this, I'm suspicious of the 100% signal strength - when I search for wireless networks, it shows 47% signal strength, but after attempting to connect, the network properties show 100% signal strength. |

I had the same problem with "Xandros" on my "Eee PC".
I stopped and deleted all the network connections in the control center and it worked.
So try that out if you haven't already.

| I tried deleting all the network connections, but that didn't work. Neither did installing a new network card. I had to reinstall Xandros 4.5 OCE, and had no issues since. Still no idea what went wrong the first time. |

The only time I had this problem is after installing a samsung printer usng its Linux installation disk. It changed permissions in a whole series of files and reinstall was the only solution. So if something non Xandros was installed that might be what triggered t _________________ War doesn't determine who's right - only who's left. |

At my wits end! wifi stopped a few times mysteriously then started a few days later, this time it has been down for 2 weeks.I have read all searches related to this topic and most other semi related tried a few "remedies" to no avail e.g kept hitting f9 on boot up to reinstall everything.
pc is a 1001 eepc 1.6.0.104, build info 2008-06-171024 mb mem.installed with xandros and was running fine.
If I try to set up a wired or wifi connection no joy
Latest error message reads "error setting up inter proccess comms for KDE"
previous messages include "could not read network connection list /root/DCOPserver-asus_17257XXXX_0"
please check DCOPserver is running etc.
I am very reluctantly looking at the XP package that also came with the PC and think shall I? but that would defeat the object of buying this PC spec.
Is there anyone out there going to help an old man (getting older by the minute) |

Is anything else not working? You can log in to your desktop, other programs work?
I don't know what hitting f9 does on the eeepc - you may have to backup your data files and reinstall the OS from a CD. |

Thanks Molgen,
Yes everything else seems to be working.
Hitting the F9 was something that had been suggested on a semi related thread that seemed worth a try.
I didn't get a xandros OS cd with this PC any suggestions ? |

Hi, I presume you've tried this stuff: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:wireless_unexpected_stop
I noticed in one of your posts you mentioned DCOP server. This happens to Linux distros. There are several threads about this and it possibly is involved in your wireless issue: http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=28119
This is a situation with the ownership of the .ICE------ file which somehow revert to root and don't allow the .DCOP----- files to be written on boot as a user. When this happens, there is some info that wireless does get affected. Worth a try.
Open up Xandros File Manager on the eeepc and check the permissions on these files. As far as I know these files get invented each time you start up, you can change permissions on them back to user as a first try. Open a root XFM is the easy way and R click, permssions tab. I think you can also delete them outright or rename. _________________ War doesn't determine who's right - only who's left. |

I am a complete newbie to linux and xandros and if you forgive my ignorance your advice given below although very much appreciated was all "bagpipe music" to me.

I have an eeepc somewhere, but I think one of my family has it. I can't find it, and it's one of those days where I'm in the patient mode due to a series of ridiculous events.
So 'think' you should be going like this:
Right click on the network icon on the taskbar. A network thingy should be there. Is there an "x" in enable wireless networks? If not that's the thing to do. If that ain't it, then do this:
launch-applications-system-admin tools-Xandros File Manager (administrator)
Then go to "view" at the top left in XFM (admin), and look for the option that says "show hidden files", you want that checked. You need to go to "My Home", and in there are files called things like .DCOPserver (note the "." in front. this makes the files hidden. Go to "view" again and check off "detailed list". You will see a "permissions column. This is what we are going to change.
Go to one of the several .DCOP files. There will be 2 of these and 2 more called "symbolic link" I think. Right click on the ones that are not symbolic links and at the top you will see a "permissions" tab. You want that. Then make sure that the owner boxes read, write and execute are checked. Group and others should have read and execute checked. Then go to .ICEauthority and make sure the owner has read and write checked. All the others are probably blank.
If yuo changed the permissions, then logout and log back in. You don't have to shut down, just log in/out. Maybe wireless will be back -- Here's hoping. Let me know what happens. I will get the eeepc back by evening and be able to maybe give more eeepc-specific advice. _________________ War doesn't determine who's right - only who's left. |
