I had heard that the latest version of Amarok 1.4.1+ was indeed very nice and that it supported iPod and Last.FM radio out of the box, meaning no messing around with scripts or such. So I set out to install Amarok from Source. As I am not a programmer, I did not understand many errors or messages while it compiled. But Amarok's "make" file gives exactly what is missing, how to fix it and also tells if Amarok will install and work.

So once it was installed correctly, I thought I should share this with the community as you guys have helped me and advised me in many occasions.

I hope to have captured all the things I did to get it working:

01. Install taglib-1.4 Download the Source and compile.

Quote:
http://ktown.kde.org/~wheeler/taglib/

02. libjpeg and libjpeg dev package - Install these 2 from XN

03. ruby1.8 and ruby dev packages - Install these 2 from XN

04. kde dev tools - Install this package from XN

05. After all this I got an error for libXcursor.la not found.
I found an article in forums.xandros.com about installing xorg-compat-dev to solve the libXcursor.la issue. So install xorg-compat-dev using XN.

06. Untar Amarok source tar ball and run configure. If there are any other errors like missing headers or libraries, trying looking it up in XN and then install it. If the "configure" script does not give any errors, then it is straight forward, just run "make" and su -c "make install" to install the package.

07. If you already have a working version of Amarok (older version), make sure to:
a. uninstall Amarok using XN
b. move ~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc to a different name
c. move ~/.kde/share/app/amarok directory to a different name.

08. run this command as root i.e. su -c kbuildsycoca

09. Run Amarok on command line to capture all errors.

It took me around 3 hours in total to run configure 3 times, fix errors and install the packages. But with this list above you should be able to get this done within 1 hour or so.

Hope this helps. I have not tried iPod yet, but I did Last.FM radio and it works great. I will update after I have had time to play with iPod.

The only other thing I noticed with the new version is that there is tab for megatune.com music store or some kind.

Good luck. Please let me know if there are other things I need to add to this list.

Good Job, GGR Very Happy

I don't know if you realize that Amarok 1.4.3 is available to install on Xandros Networks for both Xandros 3 and Xandros 4.
There are times when you will need ggvr's directions to install from source and you will be assured of a compatible install as long as all supporting packages are available. Those who are put off by tarballs and gz or make installs, you have the option of XandrosNetworks.

Thanks GGR

It's called music manager instead of amarok.

XN Networks search results:

11. Music Manager (not available for installation from current application sources)
Status: Not installed
Description: Player for CD's, radio streams, MP3's and iPods

By the way I'm doing this so I can not only play my 80 gb iPod Classic but so I can also manage it (copy mp3's from PC to iPod, created directories by musician, album, etc)

the only thing I have in my source.list is

deb http://xnv4.xandros.com/4.0/pkg xandros4.0-xn main contrib non-free

What version of Xandros do you have that doesn't have Music Manager by default?

Neither "Xandros Home Edition 4.0-4.2" or "4.1-4.2 OCE"
included "Music Manager, while "Premium 4.0-4.2" and
"Professional 4.1-4.2" did.

However, both "Amarok 1.3.8" and "1.4.4" are available
by adding following lines to your "/etc/apt/sources.list":
deb http://www.geekconnection.org/ xandros3 main
deb http://www.geekconnection.org/ xandros4 main

Added deb http://www.geekconnection.org/ xandros4 main to my source.llist file. Not sure what to do next? Checked out geekconnection.org, did not see any mention of Amarok?

Should I do an apt-get, or somehow use xandros networks to install amarok?

tks.

you should be able to do an apt-get update and then apt-get install amarok if that doesn't work do an apt-cache search amarok and do the install using the right name.

Recommends the use of "Synaptic Package Manager" when other
than "Xandros Distribution Site" repositories are used. Because it
gives better visual control than "Console", "Aptitude" and "XN".
