I collect old computers and put Linux on them and give them away to (mostly) elderly people - they can do their email and a little web browsing, keep in touch with family etc. I had installed Xandros 4OCE on one a 18 monts ago, and then the video card failed. Put a different one in. The initial boot screen comes up, then it fades and quits. I'm thinking that the new video card will require a reinstall or can I load up a driver for it? The old card was an Nvidia something and the new/used one is ATI Radeon 2400. Anyone who knows? All advice and experience welcome! _________________ War doesn't determine who's right - only who's left. |

An new video driver is defenitely needed. Have you tried
the boot options "Failsafe" and/or "Expert"? _________________ Linux User #432929

I had to get it a new power supply also. I'll be trying over the weekend. I may just reinstall Xandros as the easy way to fix it up. _________________ War doesn't determine who's right - only who's left. |

You should be able to boot into safe-mode, or at least get to a command prompt then delete your xorg.conf file and re-run the xandros-video-detect; I think that is what it is called.
If you custom compiled a driver, you'll need to remove that and compile a new one (obviously).
Often when changing video card chipsets from nVidia to ATI it is just best to re-install; but try doing safe-mode and get VESA running at least you can then try from there. |
