Since the BBC updated its website, when I visit news.bbc.co.uk and click on many of the items I see the message "Cannot play media. You do not have the correct version of the flash player."

There is a link to download the correct version, and I downloaded the .rpm version and XN installed it, apparently successfully. But I still get the same message. The browser is Firefox 2.0.0.6, but Konqueror has the same problem.

I seem to recall the same problem- I wound up having 2 copies of libflashplayer.so in the plugin directory- both the old and the new.

Yep, it seems like the Flash installer puts the new libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/flash-plugin . You need to move it from there to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins (or wherever the existing libflashplayer.so is located) using the administrative file manager. After that you can delete the flash-plugin folder.

The folks who develop Linux should really start paying attention to this kind of stuff. On Windows the player would just install and work. That's how it should be on Linux, too.

You could also contact the bbc and tell them that you object to having to install an unnecessary proprietary player. You could also point out that their market share will be increased and their mission statement better satisfied if all computers (old and new) will play their video clips.

On a side note, I recently discovered Veoh.com only uses the updated flash player files. As of this writing the current version is 9.0.124.0. I simply extracted libflashplayer.so from the RPM file, replaced the old libflashplayer.so and the browser was good to go again.

When you get to the point where you really understand your computer, it's probably obsolete.
