I have successfully installed Xandros pro 4.0 on an old Packard Bell laptop. It is the only OS running on the rig. When I got it booted up I connected to my wireless network (which appeared immediately). The icon on the taskbar showed the two little computers talking to each other and I thought I was away....

However, on launching Firefox, no joy. I have checked out the info for my PCI slot and I have:

0000:06:00 Ethernet Controller: Atheros Communications, Inc AR5005G 802.11abg NIC (rev 01)
Subsystem: Linksys: Unknown device 0053
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 168, IRQ 10
Memory at 16000000 (32bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: [44] Power management version 2

So it seems that xandros is detecting the card and the network, but the lack of driver (?) is stopping it from operating. From what I understand from the forum so far, the ndiswrap stuff only works if you are running Windows - which I am not. I also notice the Xandros support site mentions that WPC54G (ver4) is supported, but not (ver7.1).

Oh yes... all the lights on the card are flashing away like they should. I feel we are but a short step away! From my reading of other posts on similar subjects I feel that the ESSID setting could be the key to this, however, as a newbie to all of this stuff I have no idea what the ESSID is, let alone how to change it.

By the way is 'prefetchable' (see above) a real word?

Hi,
you can try using NDISWrapper to install the Windows driver for your wireless network card on Xandros OS. Xandros OS comes with NDISwrapper already integrated. You can refer the FAQ link below for the detailed steps
