...working great...No issues...better than any distro...

Strange, all the issues starts already when installing that operating system Confused .

First you have to remember who you are and where you lives. Then you must find
some big magnifying glasses to read and type those very small letters and numbers
on that small COA label. If or when you manged to install that expensive software,
then both drivers and all usable applications are missing...

"WINDOWS" - THE HUMBUG, IS NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS.

I didn't have to do any of that.

Windows came pre-installed.

Buy the way - you think Vista sucks. That's cool.

Actually, I have no personal experience with Vista. I'm just going by what people who have used it tell me, what I've read in reviews of it, and so on. Your experience seems to be different from what seems to be the majority opinion, at least in the people I've heard from. If it works for you, use it! (But we're still likely to say it sucks, some of us because we've actually used it, some of us because we've heard from others that have used it, and most likely some of us because we know enough about Microsoft's past behaviors that we find it difficult to say anything good about them. So it goes.)

Wow. After running Vista on this machine for a few days, I am pleasantly surprised. Once you look past all the issues that surround Vista, it is actually a very solid OS. I've only had 1 Blue Screen error (IRQ not less or Equal). Windows was nice enough to give me time to see the error, before rebooting automatically (or after a key press maybe?). Oh, and it was a Blue Screen Of Death. I thought they were supposed to be red...???

The Windows Diagnostic tool is incredible. I'm going to have to break this system more, so I can put that diagnostic tool through its paces. To actually have the computer tell me what is wrong with it, AND how to fix it.

The "check for solutions" feature is great as well, and I'm sure that Microsoft will handle that one well, sort of anyway...

The Aero interface is nice, but I've since disabled it. Its not really necessary. I do really like the icons, much better than Windows XP.

The User Account Control feature isn't all it is cracked up to be. It still needs a lot of fine tuning, and better support from 3rd party programs.

Its fairly slow to start with. Due to the fact that it is indexing files. However, that does speed it up later.

The "Spotlight" feature in the Start Menu is a welcome addition to Windows.

This is by no means, another Windows Me. That is just FUD.

Then we come back to DRM, which is not a problem right now. I haven't run into it. At the moment, there is no difference between Linux, an Win9x. However, one day we will have to face the reality of DRM. With DRM enabled files, and monitoring utilities.

Windows Defender is a big joke. It is a great tool, and one that is needed, but it confuses so many people.

I tried Vista Basic as well. While Vista Basic does not have all of the bells and whistles, it is not really a bad OS. With a proper 3D card, it still looks rather nice. Or you can use the Classic theme. You just have to convince yourself that you are using Vista Home, or the REAL Vista version, and not some Vista wannabe, Plain Jane "Basic" version...

It is frustrating testing Vista. This OS has so much potential. Its too bad that Microsoft tried to pull a fast one with it...

It's great that Vista is "self-aware" enough to know what's wrong with it when you have problems. What scares me is how else this technology can be used. I read someone had Vista and a song they ripped to mp3 on a cd they own suddenly mysteriously stopped being able to play on Vista. "You don't have the rights to play this file....' or some garbage. So what is Vista doing in the background? Looking up your mp3 online then deciding if it will allow you to play it or not? So it's possible many things do work on Vista... until Vista has time to check your files out? I think even XP has some of this technology built in. I was able to edit a divx video file in movie maker. Later after going online it wouldn't allow me to do so. So now XP is no longer ALLOWED to go online (the cable modem is unplugged) and guess what? Everything works perfectly. Spies are trapped! Just my Xperience.
Best Regards,
Erich-H

I have plenty of MP3s on my system. They play on Vista just fine.

I think people are a bit to paranoid these days.

PostPosted: Mon Mar 03, 2008 5:09 pm    Post subject: Private M*crosoft emails Reply with quote

Private M*crosoft emails unearthed during a US court case have revealed that even the software giant's own executives struggled to get Windows Vista running smoothly.

Early adopters of the operating system, which launched last year, battled with widespread hardware and software compatibility issues. Many PCs initially sold as "Vista Capable" were unable to run some of Vista's core features, sparking a class action lawsuit against M*crosoft.

Many computer components and peripherals required updated drivers in order to work with Vista. In numerous cases these were not available until long after the operating system launched.

But the emails show that it wasn't just end-users who were incensed by Vista's teething issues. In fact, M*crosoft's top brass were fully aware of them from the outset.

One executive, Mike Nash, complained he was "burned" so badly by compatibility issues he was left with "a $2100 email machine".

Steven Sinofsky, the M*crosoft executive in charge of Windows, struggled to even get his home printer working with Vista. In an email to M*crosoft CEO Steve Ballmer in February last year, Sinofsky outlined reasons why Vista struggled at launch.

He said hardware and software vendors never "really believed we would ever ship [Vista] so they didn't start the work [on updated drivers] until very late in 2006".

"People who rely on using all the features of their hardware (like Jon's Nikon scanner) will not see availability for some time, if ever, depending on the [manufacturer]," Sinofsky wrote.

Ballmer responded with a terse "Righto".

The "Jon" referred to is M*crosoft board member and its former chief operating officer Jon Shirley, who experienced compatibility problems with his Epson printer and scanner and his Nikon film scanner.

He could not even get some of M*crosoft's own MSN software products to work on Vista and refused to upgrade his other computer to the operating system.
"I cannot understand with a product this long in creation why there is such a shortage of drivers," Shirley wrote to Ballmer.

Other emails from various M*crosoft executives show that even they struggled to work out what "Vista Capable" and "Vista Ready" meant when buying a new PC.

"Is it true that Vista Ready doesn't necessarily mean Aero capable? I got a Dell Latitude that is Vista Ready but doesn't have enough graphics [hardware]," Sinofsky wrote.

Aero, one of Vista's most heavily marketed features, is the operating system's new graphical interface. It resembles MacOS X but can only be enabled when running on a PC with the latest graphics hardware.

In a statement regarding the release of the emails, M*crosoft spokesman Jack Evans said employees had raised concerns with Vista in order to make the program better for customers.

"That's the sort of exchange we want to encourage. And in the end, we believe we succeeded in achieving both objectives," Evans said.

Just read this today on a M$ friendly forum I belong to.

Oh btw kona0197 I don't think you should get banned. I like you poping in here and "stirring the pot" a little. Too many people want to censor others or stifle a free exchange of ideas I think it's called being politically incorrect. So go ahead and praise Vista I don't mind. I can be civil towards others even if I disagree.
