Hi I'm new.
I have used different flavours of linux for years including redhat/fedora, mandrake/mandriva, SUSE and Ubuntu.
I left them all not because I did not believe in them but because I had awful trouble with support for my Radeon X550 video card which I could not get to work. It is a PCI Express card and its support under linux seems to be limited although it is actually quite a decent card in Windoze.
I love Linux and am not a great fan of windows although my current XP install is alright for what it is. Much prefer my Mac and do not plan to go down the Vista path just yet.
Does anyone have any experience of using my particular type of card in Xandros as I am quite willing to pay Xandros if I can get back to good old Penguin land and anything Debian based is always brilliant.
I am hoping that someone can give me firstly confirmation that the card can be made to work, secondly some tips on how to achieve that (I assume that some command line stuff is going to be needed if I do not get a display first time out after install and am landed with init 3) and thoughts on how to avoid redoing everything after, for example, a kernel upgrade where I need to upgrade the kernel source and rebuild the drivers in the other distros that I have used.
Or does Xandros just do it all automatically?
Thanks. |

If you are currently running linux, type lspci -x and post the output.... Then I can give you an intelligent answer. _________________

It is likely that the open source driver included in Xandros does not support aiglx for your card... 3d Desktop is really just a technology preview, and it only works on certain cards. _________________

I'm gonna try to help you by my new experience. (Still a newby) I have an ATI X1600 and have same issue as you. But recently I installed PC Linux OS 2007 right then installed ATI's new 7.11 the regular way with no switches and stuff then just went an enabled 3d using Beryl with XGL and it worked. If anything try that. I blew i out, of course trying to install compiz fusion but I am going to eventually install it back again after I play around with Xandros and see if I can get it working. If I cannot I'm going back to PCLOS2007. I do like Xandros though. |
