Have you played with the settings in the Sound Mixer? Click Launch, Applications, Multimedia, Sound Mixer.

Well then, we're going to have to get a little more information on your sound system. Click Launch, Applications, System, Console, and in the window that opens up, type lspci -v and hit Enter. A bunch of stuff will appear on the screen. Find the stuff about multimedia/audio and copy/paste it here. That will tell us what kind of sound system your computer has, and hopefully will help us get it working properly.

We need to check if you have a couple of lines in one of the configuration files. If we have to change the file, it has to be done as Admin/root, so we might as well start out doing this with Admin/root permissions. Click Launch, Applications, System, Administrator Tools, Xandros File Manager (Administrator) and enter the Admin/root password when it asks for it. When the Admin File Manager opens up, if you haven't already done so, click View, Show All File Systems. Click the up arrow in the toolbar once, then click on All File Systems, then on the folder labeled / then on the folder labeled etc
Scroll down until you see a file labeled modules. NOT modules.conf, just plain modules. Double click it, and it should open in a text editor. If you don't see the following lines:
snd-intel8x0m
snd-pcm-oss
snd-mixer-oss
snd-seq-oss
add them. Then save the file, exit out of all programs, then reboot the computer.
Let me know whether you had those lines in the modules file, whether adding them fixed the sound problem, and so on. If that doesn't do it, there's probably a couple of other things we could try.
You might also go to the sound mixer again, and turn up things even if you don't think they'd be related to the problem. I remember one user had to turn up 'mono sound output' or something like that to get sound, even though he was using the sound card in stereo, not mono. So if there's anything you haven't tried yet, try turning them all up!

When I opened the modules file this is what I found before I modified it.
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with
# a "#", and everything on the line after them are ignored.
8250_pci
8250_pnp
ppp_generic
ppp_async
ppp_synctty
pppoe
autofs4
parport
parport_pc
lp
fuse
#snd-pcm-oss
evdev
psmouse
battery
I followed your instructios precisely and exactly as prescribed.
I think it a little better but not sure.
been along time since I've been on this machine.
Now at max volume it is about half of what it is in Windows XP
(dual Boot machine)
Am I just being unrealistic in expecting same soud level?
I have more isiues with this install that may be contributing to some other problems, like when machine boots up i see lots of stuff on boot screen sayig can't alocate stuff , and something about memory. (it was like this before your mod)
It goes by pretty fast so I'll have to write it down over several reboots or take picture with camera.
unless there's a way to view boot logs later?
Thanks for your patience |

Well, I didn't know that that would fix it, but I was hoping it might. What that does is make sure the appropriate modules/drivers for your soundcard are loaded at boot time. Hmmm, I guess that wasn't the problem.

No, I don't think so. It seems to me they should be about the same, but perhaps there is something I don't know about.

There is. Open a console (click Launch, Applications, System, Console) and enter the following command:
dmesg | less
This will print the boot messages to the screen. You can use Page Up and Page Down to scroll through the messages, and Q to exit when you are done looking at them. On my computer, there is about 10 or 12 pages of the stuff, including a number of errors and warnings. If you want to save those messages to a text file, you can do it with:
dmesg > boot.messages
and it will save the messages to a text file named 'boot.messages'.
I was hoping that getting those modules/drivers running would do the trick for you, but it apparenly did not. I'm not sure what else to do, but if something comes to mind, I'll let you know.
Anybody else have any ideas what to do to get the sound volume up? (I won't be insulted if you want to show off your superior knowledge of sound systems! )
