I am having problems since I down loaded and had the Hp multifunction printer driver failed on installation. I used Xandros networks to down load it and can't get it to work since. or the existing printer driver and several other things.

It seems to be a much bigger problem then I thought. My xandros File manager isn't working and neither is my Fire wall control and my Fire wall wizard.

when I run apt-get update I get the following.

XAN0FWCHD19:/home/jeff# apt-get update

Ign file: xandros4.0/main Release

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I guess at this point a re-install would be in order so I loaded my instalation cd into the pc but the menu that comes shows everything loaded? Is there some way of using the cd to re-install xandros 4.0

Do you have repositories other than the Xandros "official" repositories enabled? That's the most common cause of what you're seeing: you install something that requires library files not compatible with Xandros, and XN uninstalls the Xandros goodies in order to comply with your installation request. If you've got other repositories enabled, always click the "Details" button to see what's going to be done before doing the install!

Jim thank you for the responce. I was under the impresion I was istalling thru xandros net works. Maybe I was not in xandros networks. It was a couple of weeks ago and just got time to figure out what went wrong. Your post dosn't give me any direction on how to fix the problem or how to pervent it in the future. Any help would be apricated. It looks like to me me a re-install is in order but my installation cd is showing installed and dosn't show how to re-install it.

Thanks

Jim

The answer to your question about about having"official repositories en-abled" is I don't have any idea on how to en-able or disable it for that matter. Whatever Xandros comes with as defalt is what I am assuming it was at the time
thanks Jeff.

My guess is that you're probably going to have to reinstall. But, if you want to spend some time playing with things, it might be possible to fix this. You might have a look at this thread:

http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=20054

and follow the instructions given by Arne Anka. It's not exactly a newbie-friendly thing to have to do, but I did it on a friend's computer, and another friend of mine managed to work his way through it.

If you haven't installed a lot of applications and don't have a lot of personal files in your Xandros install yet, it's probably easier to just reinstall. If you boot from the install CD, I think there's an option to "replace existing Xandros install" or something like that. That should give you the option to save your /home folder, but if you don't have anything there you need to save, don't bother with that, just use the "take over a drive or partition" option.

There is what I would consider a very big problem with Xandros Networks. If you download a DEB file from somewhere else, then either double click it in the file manager, or from XN install it using File, Install DEB File, there don't appear to be any "safeties" built in. If some things you already have installed are incompatible with what you want to install, it will just uninstall them, including things like Xandros Networks, Xandros File Manager, and so on. It sounds like this is what you got bit by. It is best to NOT download and install DEB files from other websites. If there's something you need that isn't available in Xandros Networks, ask on the forums; somebody may know of a DEB that's safe to install on Xandros, or somebody might even make a DEB just for you!

Jim
