|
|
I'm brand new to Xandros, and had only a brief experience with Ubuntu. Hardware compatibility drove me back to Windoze till it crashed... again.
So. Here I am, with a fresh new install of Xandros 3.0 OCE. I like it so far, but I have a pretty major issue. My USB devices are not installing (mounting?).
I have a SimpleTech 160 GB external hard drive (NTFS, if that matters), an 80GB iPod, Nikon D50 digital camera, and a few other odd devices laying around.
When I used Ubuntu, brief though my experience was, whenever I'd connect a USB mass storage device, the OS would recognize it automatically.
Now, in Xandros, my problem seems to be exceedingly complex. For one, it seems as though the USB 1.1 ports on my computer are not recognized. My Alis PCI USB 2.0 card is recognized, but no matter what USB port I plug a device into, I get nothing.
I searched the forums for a bit, and I tried to do some investigation on my system. This is what I get when I try to diagnose the problem.

| No, I don't have a DVD burner. So I ended up giving up entirely and moving onto Freespire, bringing a whole fresh set of problems with the external hard drive. I was tempted because the live CD granted me full access to the hard drive, but now that I've actually installed the OS, only root has permission to read, and no one has access to write. |

So, as root, change the permissions. _________________

Hi tobs. "Xandros" 4.1 "OCE/Home/Premium/Professional) recognizes
most USB-devices. "Xandros" and all other "Linux" distributions uses "EXT2/3"
or "ReiserFS" filesystems. And can both read/write from/to "Windows FAT32"
partitions. Also read from "Windows NTFS" partitions. But writing to "Windows
NTFS" partitions requiers "Paragon" (included with Premium/Professional).

Thanks Doctore that helps quite a lot.
I have been running Xandros Home Edition - Premium for about 3 weeks
now and find it very good, I have been using windows for years and spent
most of my time checking for spyware, viruses and had a deep suspicion
that most of it came from microsoft, at the monent I can duel boot to
Xandros or windows but would realy love to get rid of windows all together
however as a newbe I have doubts about music manager as it says it has connected to my ipod but yet I cannot transfer files to and from, also sometimes the transfer button is there and then its gone whitch is why I asked about the NTFS or FAT32 file system. as far as I can tell linux are allways saying use linux and have no more hassle but I find some things
don't work as they should and xandros support keep giving sulotions that don't work and only shows they don't know either, so I need a friend who can help me to stay with Linux,
my thoughts now are can I get MM working, should I change my file system to fat32, and get every thing working so I can get rid of windows all together.
some points on these things would be good.
Thanks Tobs _________________ Tobs |

I don't think you can change the filesystem for Xandros to FAT. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Try posting in here with a subject heading that includes " ipod " & folks that know about them will have a better chance of finding it.
One question: does Xandros File Manager see the ipod? Can it read & write to it?
