I did a fresh install of 4.1 for my wife's computer, but
I can't get XN to install mozilla-mplayer or mplayer.

Other things installed ok, but I get "Xandros Networks
is unable to complete the installation." I click the
"details" button and all it says in the box is "broken
packages." Very informative. Laughing

My sources list is the default.

Help would be appreciated; I'm trying to impress my
Vista using wife with Linux, and she chose Xandros
after looking around Distrowatch for a while and reading
reviews.

Try this:

1) start "Xandros Networks" (XN)
2) enable "Debian Unsupported Site"
2.1) select "Update List" (if it didnt automatically)
3) Close "XN"
4) Open "Console" with administrator (root) rights
5) type "apt-get -f install" (without qoutes)
5.1) hit "Enter" and wait
This should normally fix that problem.

Thanks for trying. Those procedures had no affect on
the problem.

Is there another way to get mplayer and mplayerplug-in
installed into Firefox in Xandros? I'm thinking of trying
the mplayer site which has downloads, but I don't know
if they'll work with Xandros.

When typing "apt-get -f install", broken packages would normally
get fixed or uninstalled. If you have "Synaptic Packet Manager" you
actually can check which packages there are "broken".

I did a search and couldn't find "Synaptic Packet Manager."

The output from apt-get -f install is:

Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 11 not upgraded.

XN behaves the same upon attempting an install of mplayer or
mozilla-mplayer:

Broken packages.

Delete "xandros-networks-pkgdata.xml" and xandros-networks-pkgdata.xml.bak"
located at "/usr/share/xandros-networks". And check that "sources.list" located
at "etc/apt" only have "Xandros Supported Site" repository enabled:
deb http://xnv4.xandros.com/4.0/pkg/ xandros4.0-xn main contrib non-free

Then type "apt-get update" and hit "enter" logged as Administrator (root) in "Console".
After that "apt-get dist-upgrade" and "Enter". Accept "Y" if/when it appears and update
"Xandros". And lastly "apt-get -f install".

I seem to recall some of that, especially deleting those two
files, as fixing some problems I was having with Xandros when
it was on my machine a while back.

Thanks, I'll follow all of those instructions and post back with
the results in a few minutes here.

I went through all that and ended up with the same result.

The only difference was mplayer wasn't in the list when I
did a search for it in XN, so I added the Xandros
repository (the only one checked after those procedures
was the Debian one) and mplayer was not there but the
mozilla-mplayer was there.

Attempting to install it got me the "broken packages"
thing again.

I should also note that I found synaptics and "successfully"
installed it from XN, and it went to my "system" menu, but
it won't start.

I would suggest that your sources be correct and you pin the system//

Launch / Applications/ System Tools/ Admin Tools/ XandrosFileManager (Admin)

Navigate to /etc/apt

You will have an apt.conf and sources.list as files plus another dir

You want to modify sources.list to add resources and prevent most Broken Packages..
And also for pinning add a file named "preferences"

There are refererences to Pinning and Sources if you search the forums..

To add preferences and modify sources.list open an Admin mode editor like so
Launch/Run / kdesu kate

You can first create/Save a /etc/apt/preferences file and then modify/Save the /etc/apt/sources.list

You can use my examples below or Search the forums for other examples..

First /etc/apt/preferences
Code:

Preferences
Package: *
Pin: origin
Pin-Priority: 999

Package: *
Pin: origin xnv4.xandros.com
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: *
Pin: release a=dccri-3.0
Pin-Priority: 800

Package: *
Pin: release a=stable
Pin-Priority: 777

Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 666

Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 555

Second /etc/apt/sources.list
The "#~" in front of the first 3 lines are entries that are not looked at (Disabled) but can be made active (Enabled) for a search in XandrosNetworks by choosing them through Edit/Sources menu in XandrosNetworks
Code:

#~deb http://www.archlug.org/apt xandros4 archlug
#~deb http://www.archlug.org/apt xandros4 redrum
#~deb http://www.xandros.or.id/archive xxxx matty andrew
#~deb http://dccamirror.xandros.com/dccri dccri-3.0 main
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main
deb http://xnv4.xandros.com/4.0/pkg xandros4.0-xn main contrib non-free
deb http://xnv4.xandros.com/4.0/upkg-i386 unsupported4.0-xn main contrib non-free

All this does not take care of all Broken Package issues but should most. If
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main
is enabled as above you should be ok with MPlayer..
Also while you are at it ..Don't forget to install "W32Codecs" ...per XandrosNetworks

For Synaptic, go to the menu editor (right click on the launch button), drill down to synaptic and check "run as different user", and put root as the user.
It should then run- after asking you for the root password.

If following these instructions for installing "Synaptic"
http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?p=190631&highlight=#190631
it should work "out of the box" in all accounts. From instructions:
Quote:
Recommends (0.55cvs) from Xandros Unsupported Site (=Debian Sarge)
plus install also "gksu", "deborphan", and "libgnome2-perl". Enable
"Xandros Unsupported Site" and type following in "Console" as "root":
"apt-get install synaptic gksu deborphan libgnome2-perl" in console" (no qoutes)

Great advice from all of you. Thank you, I know all that
will work and solve the problems I'm having; at the
moment I can't work on it, but later I will and post back
the results, which I know will be positive.

Thanx again.. Very Happy

graystarr, Enable both "Xandros Distribution Site" AND "Debian Unsupported Site"
in Xandros Network. You might also need to use "Console" as Administrator (root) typing
"apt-get -f install" to force an install of missing packages (from Unsupported site).
