If he's got 2 cards in there, he'll need to turn off the onboard to use the other one.

My understanding is that isn't always necessary in windows.

Sorry to have not posted lately. I spent the weekend working on this. First I tried installing a new sound card. I picked up a Sound Blaster Audigy PCI card and installed it. It worked fine in Windows after I disabled the on board audio device. Nicely, I was able to detect this new card with Xandros. However, running alsaconf led to a problem; alsaconf showed the new card, but when I ran it I recieved a flurry of error messages...followed by the infuriating lines "have fun"! Running it again, it no longer detected any PCI devices. So I figured that I could refresh the alsa library. I had the great idea of doing this through xandros networks. I removed "libasound2" which, for some reason also deleted files associated with kde. I reinstalled this library (hoping all was ok) and rebooted...no more GUI!

At this point I figured on trying the other recommended path: upgrading to Xandros desktop 4. I took out the new card. Installed Xandros 4 and lo and behold all is well!!! I wonder what did the trick; could it be the new kernel, or perhaps a more robust autodetect program?

Anyhow, everything is working great and now I can focus on doing some science. Sometimes the 'lazy' path really is the best. I wish I had only listened before. Thank you all for the helpful comments.

My guess would be a more up to date and perhaps more expansive library.

Good to hear all is working. Smile

Yeah, the latest version seems to always just work better, but I suspect that your disableing the onboard card may have been the key.

Also, whenever removing a package, always check the details to see what else is to be removed. Because of the way apt-get handles dependancies, what happened to you it isn't unheard of.
