PostPosted: Thu Mar 01, 2007 10:21 am    Post subject: sound problem probably...hopfully simple Reply with quote

Hello friends,

I hope someone can help me here. I searched the forum threads and could not find anything that could solve my problem.

I recently installed Xandros (kernel 2.6.11, XP dual boot) and cannot get my sound up and running in Xandros (Realtek HD audio device). I went to Realtek and downloaded the latest ALSA files and tried installing them with their makefile script. All seems fine, then the script begins the alsaconf program and I get the following message, "No supported PnP or PCI card found". The same occurs when I run alsaconf on it's own.

I checked the PCI devices and modules info, and cannot find my audio device anywhere. I will put the system info below; hopefully it means something to someone. What can I do now? I hope that someone can help me here.

Otherwise, I am having trouble 'growing' in Linux knowledge. For instance, the info below is like French to me. I can understand a word here and there, but it means little to me on the whole. Can someone recommend a source, where I can really learn this material? There are so darn many books and websites, but the ones I've glanced at are either too simple or too complex.

Thank you sincerely your time and consideration.

What is the Exact Realtek Sound chip # id that you are using?
Seems as though that your particular sound card may not be supported.

in a console see if you can look for the Realtek
lspci | grep R

In Linux and particular Xandros the souncard almost always gets detected, if the driver is
included in the kernel. Probably the driver module to this Realtek HD audio isnt?

It seems to be an ATI chipsed based motherbord, so...

Searching and installing driver might an solution. Another could be to test another PCI soundcard.
And the lazy mans (as myself) would be to try Xandros 4.1 with kernel 2.6.18...

First off, thank you for the replies; I appreciate it.
Well, I looked at the contents of lspci and the only realtek device it showed was my ethernet card. I'll list the contents below. Most of the listings are for ATI tech. Unknown devices...is this normal? Everything on this computer works great, but for the audio.

I also checked the listing for Audio adaptor in the xandros control center. Here were the results:

class=0x040300
classname=0403
desc=437b
manu=ATI Technologies Inc
pci= 0x1002, 0x437b, 0x103c, 0x2a3d
revision=01
subdesc=2a3d
submanu=Hewlett-Packard Company

Hm, upgrading Xandros, is an interesting option. But honestly I'm nervous to take a 'drastic' step. I set up this machine for work and I am finally productive on it...now I just want my tunes man (plus skype, youtube, etc.)!

Thanks again.

And the output from lspci:

If everything else works and you gets all needed things done with XOS3, why
not turn ntegrated sound off and test an PCI soundcard? Old SoundBlaster
PCI and probably Live cards should work. Sometimes the lazyest solutions
are usable.

Nothing shows? You might also try in a console
lspci | grep audio
or
lspci | grep Audio
That failing to uncover audio perhaps you have some sound BIOS settings that you can try to experiment with..Should only be One or Two..
Usually we see the sound card but then perhaps the Driver isn't actuating it and in isolated cases we can adjust settings or modules. However not seeing a Sound Device is a whole different Kettle of Fish.

But I am inclined to agree with Doctore. A simple cheap PCI SoundCard.
Onboard Video and Sound are not usually of the most compatible of devices.

Umm, have you tried opening the sound mixer> (Launch>apps>multimedia>sound mixer)

Check to make sure the sound level isn't turned way down or muted.

Yes, Something we should suggest right off but that would surprise me as the system is recognizing the sound chip..

Why would that surprise you ? It was a pretty common problem on earlier versions of Xandros.

The PCI bridge can usually read each card ID but it takes a driver to use the card. When you can't read a card ID then that is probably a failing of the PCI bridge itself.

Davepet,
Maybe I am missing something here....
wmoss says he has a Realtek HD audio device. The readout in the first post only shows a Realtek Ethernet card as the only Realtek device found

Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 16).

I don't see where the Control Center knows of a Realtek Audio card??

What did I miss?

Well, the control center is seeing an ATI soundcard, with a submanufacturer HP

I'm guessing there is an onboard soundcard from that & it just now occurred to me that he may have an additional card ....if so, I wonder if the onboard card is turned off in BIOS?

Doh! I was reading the PCI output of the first post and not the second post.

Possibility, I guess a good question is "was the sound working on the previous OS?"
If so the BIOS sound is turned on.
