Hi guys,

I've installed Xandros but I'm still having problems with a few things. There are two video related issues I need to sort out.

The first is that the whole time the computer is on, I can see loads of these weird horizontal lines that appear to move up and down on the screen. They're kind of faint, but when you look at the screen for a while you notice them a lot. They're also more obvious on darker colours. I've tried adjusting the monitor refresh rate and the brightness/contrast but they didn't really make any difference.

The second problem is in the LILO screen where you choose between Windows and Xandros (because I'm running a dual boot). For some reason the Xandros logo is pink! I'm sure this isn't normal as it looks like the logo has gone negative (as in photo negative) which seems really weird.

If anyone has any suggestions about either of these I'd really appreciate it.

Sim.

Is Windows working normally?

Did you install Xandros 4.0 or 4.1?
If its 4.0 then try to install SP1.

Windows is working fine. I think at the moment it's just Xandros 4.0. I assume to install SP1 I just need to go into Xandros networks? I'll have a go when I get home later and let you know. Cheers,

Sim.

Dont know your Xandros version? Just open:
"Launch>Control Center>Control Center"
and look in the middle for "machine: 2.6.XX-dcc-XXX"

If its 2.6.15 then download service pack (torrent).
But if its 2.6.18 then you already have it installed.

You can use XN to install SP1, but by downloading it, a lot of
time is saved next time its needed. SP1 is 390MB ISO file, and
includes kernel 2.6.18, xorg 7.1 and much more. Unzip and
burn the ISO file to CD-Rom. When Xandros is up and running,
put CD-Rom in CD-Drive and follow instructions.

I knew it was 4.0. I just wasn't sure whether XN had already downloaded SP1. I checked two different ways and apparently it has (I'm on version 2.6.18. Any ideas how to solve the problem?

Probably new video driver is needed, located at:
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux/linux-radeon.html

The driver version that should be used with XOS4.1 (xorg 7.1) is:
Automated installer and Display Drivers for XFree86 4.3 and X.Org 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1

Dont have ATI card myself and cant help with installation procedure.
Instructions should be found on ATI homepage.

Are you running at the correct (native) resolution for your monitor?

As far as I can tell I'm running the max resolution (I'm on 1280x1024) quoted in the spec which I assume should be fine. Also, that res runs fine in XP.

I tried downloading the video driver that Doctore kindly posted, but I can't work out how to install it. I've tried going to "installer instructions" above the download link, but what's there doesn't make much sense.

I tried just double clicking on the driver file but it comes up with some kind of error message (although I'll have to wait until I'm back on my home machine if you need me to post what it says). Can anyone either tell me how to install the drivers or give me a link to some instructions?

The first though was, its some rumble, disturbing the signal. But as said,
Windows is working. If possible, test with an other video card.

Did a quick search "how to install ati drivers to linux" and "how to install ati drivers to xandros".
Here are a few links:
http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Installing_ATI_drivers

http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=29456&sid=4e36766063215d529c302fe03816ddd0

Whishing I could be of better help.

Right click your desktop & select "properties"> "settings" if you are not sure. LCD displays do strange things if not running at their native resolution. I had to manuallly set the resolution for my Samsung 940BX as Xandros couldn't seem to pick the right one (laptop LCD/DFP 1280x1024) click the "advanced" button to see the options.

Have noticed the resolution problem also with CRT-monitors.
Its been when using some VIA integrated chipset and drivers
not worked correctly. That helped with editing xconfig.

Thanks for the help guys. I recently got a new monitor and it seems to have sorted out the problem with the lines on the screen. I'll probably update the video drivers and stuff like that anyway, but in the mean time it's fine now. Very Happy

The Lilo screen is still coming up in weird colours though. Do you think that will be solved by updating the graphics drivers?
