|
|
This Linux Newbie needs some help getting a Brother HL5280DW printer to work. It is connected to another computer (Windows XP) by USB and is shared, and it is also connected to my Router by a network cable. I have installed the LPR driver (brhl5280dwlpr-2.0.0-1.i386.deb) and the CUPS wrapper from Brother's web page using the instructions at http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/lpr_install.html
The instructions say the "/etc/printcap" file should show:
:rm=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\
:rp=lp\
This text is what I see:
> # This file was automatically generated by cupsd(8) from the
> # /etc/cups/printers.conf file. All changes to this file
> # will be lost.
> HL5280DW:\
> :mx=0:\
> :sd=/var/spool/lpd/HL5280DW:\
> :sh:\
> :lp=/dev/usb/lp0:\
> :if=/usr/local/Brother/lpd/filterHL5280DW:
The "/etc/cups/printers.conf" file is blank. I am assuming that ":rm=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\" should be the IP address of the printer. The HL5280DW is connected to one of the ports on a Linksys BEFSR41 Router using DHCP. How do I find the IP address of the printer? The printer appears in the Print dialog for all installed programs, but shows as a Local Printer. I have not been able to get any help from Linksys (no support for out of warranty products).
I first tried installing the LPR driver through Xandros Network, but had the same Local Printer problem. And I have tried installing it in Add Printer by browsing to it on the WinXP computer. The Printer works OK on the WinXp computer and my WinXP laptop. In both of these attempts, when I tried to print a Test Page, it appeared to print in Xandros, but I got nothing from the printer. After deleting the printer and using the above instructions, the printer appears, but is shown as Not Accepting print jobs.
Thank you!

First.. Except in emergency the days of writing your own Printcap are gone, Thankfully.
There are several methods But I would try first..
The Foomatic hl1250 is the base driver for your printer..
Use the Xandros 4 Add Printer Wizard and choose
Local/USB/Brother/HL5150 or HL5170
This should work..
**********************************
This is from the Brother site..
The Ghostscript hl1250 driver can be used by
HL-1030 HL-1230 HL-1240 HL-1250 HL-1270N
HL-1430 HL-1435 HL-1440 HL-1450 HL-1470N
HL-1650 HL-1670N HL-1850 HL-1870N HL2030
HL-2040 HL-2070N HL-5030 HL-5040 HL-5050
HL-5070N HL-5150D HL-5240 HL-5250DN HL-5270DN
HL-5280DW HL-6050 HL-6050D HL-6050DN HL-P2500
cat input.ps | gs –q –dNOPAUSE –sDEVICE=hl1250 –sOutputfile=- - | lpr

That did not fix it. The printer is on a network. This sets the driver up for a USB connection. _________________ N8OAY

My bad!
I gave you directions as if the printer were on your LINUX Box..try instead..
Use the Xandros 4 Add Printer Wizard and choose
Network/Windows/
[Browse ](and find the Printer on the Win Computer and Choose it/ then
Next and choose your Printer..Brother/HL5150 or HL5170
When you Click the Browse button you should be able to Navigate to the Win Machine that Host that Printer and choose the Printer ..If you can't there is a Network issue you need to solve First.. _________________

That will not work either. It is not connected to another computer. It is a network printer. Xandros wants an IP number (###.###.###.###) for the printer, which I do not know how to find. My router is set up to use DHCP. _________________ N8OAY

Is your printer set up by IP address or Host name?
You should be able to print some kind of configuration page from the printer itself. I'm not familiar with that printer, but I have extensive experience supporting printers for HP. There are certain common features on most printers, but how those features are accessed is different.
A configuration page would tell you what your printer's IP address and/or host name is.
You then have to tell Xandros what it is. _________________ geekydude

Your statement above led me to believe is was shared from a WinXP box.
So following my directions above choose in Printer Wizard ..
Network/Other/
Next...Give it a Name
Connecton..Click on it and choose Internet Printing Protocol IPP
Host Name... ipp://192.168.1.150
{The Host Name ipp is an example to find your printer's read Below}
ONce the IP is Chosen Next and Pick Printer Type and Model Driver Foomatic
HOW To Find The Printer's IP... Process of Elimination..Like so..
In a console type this command with your Local Domain/Workgroup
If you have more then One Workgroup/DomainName then you must do one command for each and examine the Outputs..
..The Output will look something like this.......
Many times the repeater 192.165.2.100 is the Printer..
If not then eliminate the IPs known to be Computers on the LAN
~$ nmblookup workgroup
querying workgroup on 192.165.2.255
192.165.2.249 workgroup<00>
192.165.2.244 workgroup<00>
192.165.2.233 workgroup<00>
192.165.2.100 workgroup<00>
192.165.2.205 workgroup<00>
192.165.2.208 workgroup<00>
192.165.2.100 workgroup<00>
192.165.2.100 workgroup<00>

I am thinking this may be a Router issue. I found the printer's IP address and installed the driver again. I still can not print to it. I tried connecting it to the Xandros computer with a USB cable, and installed the driver as a local printer. It prints OK. I then tried to install it as both a network and shared printer on a 3rd Windows computer. Same problem...that computer sees the printer and appears to be printing, but does not print anything. _________________ N8OAY

I have confirmed that I have a defective Router. The port that I have the printer connected to is not working correctly - It allows the printer to be seen, but is not letting data sent to the printer get through. After going through the steps that sqlpython offered, I figured out that it was a network problem, and started troubleshooting that when I got home from work tonite. Swapping ports with the printer and a working computer confirmed the dead port.
Thank you to sqlpython and geekydude...it would have taken much longer to figure this out without the last post from sqlpython...this is my first attempt at networking doing something other and NETBEUI or using the WinXP network wizard to make a floppy diskette to run on my other computers to configure the network. _________________ N8OAY

Your Welcome!
from myself and my brother geekydude.
Happy that you got to the solution quickly. Find a router on sale and replace it. One port souring on a Residential grade router may be a sign of failures to come. _________________
