You will need a program like Cedega that works as an application layer for win/Linux. www.transgaming.com you can get a demo copy, purchase it for 15$ and get updates for 3 months or subscribe for 5$ a month.

Please note that not all steam games are supported on Cedega.

Not only that, but different versions have different levels of support for various games.

Unfortunately, Steam is the most troublesome. Support for Half-Life 2 in Steam was near perfect when running Cadega 4.2. Steam updates later broke compatibility, and the Steam games have been a moving target ever since.

The Games Database entry has not been updated in a while, so I don't know what version to recommend. Steam is an officially supported program, meaning it SHOULD work, or you should get your money back.

Not only THAT, but many of the multiplayer Source games were broken during the release of GMOD10. I have not had a chance to see if they were fixed yet...

Monster,

could I ask a little question?

If you had to "rate" steam on a scale of 1-10 with 1 bad and 10 good, how would you rate it in terms of automatically downloading the item and also interacting with the person as to paying or whatever....

as opposed to a "home brew" system for the same thing....say for the sake of argument, I was going to use steam to "service" a "mod" that I maintain on my servers...as opposed to providing the "mod" on my own servers and having my people provide service rep function...

These would not be a "steady stream" of users here, it would come in "bunches" about three times a year...probably a thousand or so user requests over a month's time...for three months of the year...

idea being, I'm either going to go with "steam", theyh handle the mod, they handle the downloads they handle the support and they harvest a percentage off the orders or maybe I use another game, and company, that doesn't have the automated system and service the stuff myself...

don't know if you understand the question, but from a "user's point of view, you seemed to have some reservations, where I thought that steam was pretty much a well oiled machine...

just a question...

ain't XAndros grEAT!

I would rate it as a 6.

It starts out good. The idea has a great concept behind it. Automatic updates for games, and the ability to download mods, and new games from the same program. Which will also be kept up-to-date. This ensures that everybody is able to play the same game, without version error messages. It also helps to prevent hackers from spoiling the games.

The initial impression is usually a 10. You do the usual browsing, pick the game, click the "buy" button, and then give it your credit card information. Finally you download the game, and get to playing.
1.2.3. Wait. Done. It is simple, and straight forward.

The problems arise when Steam updates. Suddenly your game may no longer work. Your customers will be unable to revert to a previously working version, due to the updating procedure. So you, or Steam, or both must release a patch, that fixes the problem. If you can figure out what went wrong...

Then "features" that worked before, suddenly are removed because hackers used them. Which means you have to rebuild your mod.

Finally, updates to the mod are put on Steam, at Steam's convenience. Which means it could be weeks, or over a month, if they are working on a game themselves.

Steam is a fragile machine, that requires constant maintenance. Every bit of maintenance has the risk of breaking the machine.

Hey Monster.....

You really are a very knowledgeable and informative fellow....really....

I would NEVER have thought to be having such a discussion here at the friendly forums of Xandrosia....

Your comments will (possibly) help my partner and I make a decision in the near future about an outside situation.

All this and fifty cents MAY be worth a cuppa joe...or it may be significant....one never knows, but we have wrestled with the thing about steam for the last month and now have information which provides a better perspective. Most people with which we have talked have been influenced by the origins of the conversation itself and your information "should" be able to be viewed as neutral third party information.

About a month will tell....

aaaahhhhh the anticipation....and handwringing...! Smile

thanks muchly Monster.....
