|
|
Hi,
I am the owner of a Sony VAIO GR214 MP that has a built in V.90/K56Flex (56kbps) data/fax modem. This is all very nice and it did work with my XP, but Xandros does not recognise it. When I try to configure it manually as a generic 56k modem, the connection timed out every time. I think it has something to do with the COM ports, (Xandros shows only COM 1 and I think there should be more...) but I can't solve it. Can you help me? |

DO you know if this modem is a "winmodem" ? I did a little digging and it does appear to be a winmodem. Xandros has support for some winmodems, and possibly this one. Could you launch the control centre, open the Hardware Info section, then the Hardware detection subsection and see if you have a Modem or Winmodem section there . If so, can you post the contents of this modem or winmodem section here.
Thanks

Hi, thanx for the reply
It is indeed a winmodem and the info in hardware detection says:
manu = Intel Corporation
pci = 0x8086, 0x2486, 0xFE |

Here is a screenshot
(Why cant one just copy/paste)
This is how the device shows up in the control centre under Hardware Information / PCI
If you need more info, just ask |

Ok, I looked into this modem and the documentation says that it should work with the PCTel Winmodem driver that we ship with Xandros. Also, I looked at the source code of the driver, and it appears that it knows about your modem. However, the Xandros detection system doenst know about the card, so no auto-configuration has been done. I would recommend you try telling the hardware detection system about your card by doing the following as root :
Edit the /etc/devices/ext/pctel-winmodem.pcimap file with a text editor (Ex : kate)
Add the follwing line to the end of the file :
0x8086, 0x2486, driver=ptserial_HAL_i81x, desc="PCTel WinModem i815"
Save the file, and reboot the machine. You could do a bunch of things to avoid the reboot, but they are a pain and it would be best to let the machine restart.
Once you have started the machine up again, see if you can see the modem using the connection wizard.
Also, check the output of dmesg for anything about PCTel or modems.
Hope this works, but either way I would like to hear your results. If it works, I will get it put in the next verison of the pcimap so that in the future it will automatically work without this addition.
Thanks

Ok. thanks for your help so far, but unfortunately it's still not working.
The dmesg output can be found http://www.hamish.dds.nl/dmesg.txt.
I've marked (some, maybe not all) lines with '***'.
In the hardware detection the winmodem is now found as a PCTel winmodem with the pt_serial_HAL_i81x driver.
The connection wizard does not detect the modem either
I hope this helps
Thanx,
Ralph

Hi Ralph,
So the connection wizard still cant find your modem correct ? Im glad you posted the output of dmesg, there are some interesting things there.

So it looks like it found the modem, but its not working for some reason. I see the driver is complaing about the IRQ assignment. Do you know what IRQ the modem usually has, or does the BIOS tell you ?
Do you have a /dev/ttyS15 link ? What do you have in the /dev/tts/ direcotry ( a ls -l would be nice)?
Something you may want to try temporarily is disabling the onboard sound card in the BIOS and see if that does anything for the modem.
Thanks

Hi Matthew,
The BIOS does not allow me to change (or even see) anything concerning the onboard (AC97) devices. It refers me to the system supervisor (obviously that's me, but I have no clue).
All software (including Windows XP) was contained in 1 single image, so I cannot install any application seperately.
I have no recollection of the IRQ assigned to the modem in the XP-days.
No /dev/ttyS15 device exists. The directory /dev/tts/ contains 3 entries:
- . (root/root)
- .. (root/root)
- 0 (root/dialout)
I am stumped. I hope you are not.
Any tools in this distro that would allow me to disable ACPI for example?
The soundcard appears to have an IRQ problem as well (intermittent soundplayback).
Kind regards,
Ralph.
PS. How does a simple copy & paste of text from a console to a browser, or from the built-in text-editor to a browser (Mozilla) work in Xandros? This would speed up composing messages greatly and bypass all uploading procedures). A clipboard would be nice. |

Hi Ralph,
Thats too bad that you cant disable to onboard sound device from the BIOS, but I guess its to be expected. I have just done a bunch more digging, and I have to say that the Sony Vaio sereies has the _worst_ documentation out there. Argh.
I seem to have found out that your modem is not actually a PCTel winmodem, but it is a Conexant winmodem. We ship drivers for these too, and the one Sony Vaio instructions I found out there do say that the modem works with the drivers. So, lets try that driver :
Remove that line
0x8086, 0x2486, driver=ptserial_HAL_i81x, desc="PCTel WinModem i815"
from the end of the /etc/devices/ext/pctel-winmodem.pcimap file, so its back to the way it was and save it. Then open up the /etc/devices/ext/conexanthsf-winmodem.pcimap file and add this line to the end of it :
0x8086, 0x2486, confutil="/etc/init.d/hsfsetup", desc="Intel SmartMC winmodem"
Also, edit the file /etc/devices/drivers and remove any lines that look like :
<Number> pt<serial or modem or device>
for example :: 60 pt_serial
and run the command xangenmodules. This will remove the pctel drivers from starting when you boot the machine.
Reboot the machine and see if you have a modem. I know this seems like a lot of hassle, but the integrated devices on laptops can be a real bear to get working correctly.
This should load the Connexant HSF modem driver on reboot, and hopefully it will show up in the connection wizard. If it does not, an updated dmesg output would be very nice.
Thanks for all of your patience with this.
Oh, and to paste from the console to mozilla, you have to use the old X copy/paste system. Highlight what you want to paste from the console using the mouse, then switch to the mozilla window, place your mouse cursor where you want to paste the text, and click the middle mouse button (if you only have 2 buttons, try pressing both simultaniously, or hitting CTRL+Insert)
Thanks

Ralph,
Well lets work with what we know here. The real piece of the problem is that the PCI information tells us that you have a Intel AC97 winmodem/audio combo card. The tricky part is that it can be a connexant or a PCTel chip on that modem card. It doesnt appeat from your last dmesg that the Connexant drivers see any card that they know about on your machine. Just to make sure, can you run the command :
/sbin/hsfconfig -a
and see what it tells you. Im going to assume it just errors out, and we should focus on the PCTel drivers.
The PCTel driver seemed to have seen a card that it can talk to, and besides from the puzzeling IRQ information it looks promising. I looked into some PCTel modem bugs that were logged by beta testers, and came up with some more PCTel information. I found that a lot of people with your type of modem/audio card report that the audio drivers interfere with using the modem correctly, so initially lets stop the sound driver from loading while we try the modem. If we get it working then we can try adding on the sound after.
Im pretty sure your machine is using the i810_audio sound driver. You can verify this by looking in the Control Center -> Hardware Information -> Hardware Detection and looking at the driver = line in the Audio Adapter peice. If you arent using the i810_audio, then replace that string with your driver in the following command
mv /lib/modules/2.4.19-x1/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o /root
depmod -a
This will keep the driver from loading for the audio card on following boots. To restore the audio drive, execute these commands :
mv /root/i810_audio.o /lib/modules/2.4.19-x1/kernel/drivers/sound/
depmod -a
Next Im afraid im going to have to ask you to remove that line from the /etc/devices/ext/conexanthsf-winmodem.pcimap file and re-add the line
----
0x8086, 0x2486, driver=ptserial_HAL_i81x, desc="PCTel WinModem i815"
----
to the /etc/devices/ext/pctel-winmodem.pcimap file. Repetitive I know, but its easier than doing the driver management by hand.
Now, as root we need to do the following :
add this line to the file /etc/devfs/devices
----
tts/15 c 62 79 root dialout 0660
----
and create the new file /etc/devfs/symlinks.d/winmodem and put the following 2 lines in it :
----
tts/15 ttyS15
ttyS15 modem
----
now run the command update-devfsd. This sets up the /dev/modem and /dev/ttyS15 links that the PCTel winmodems need. You should have the /dev/ttyS15 link now (ls -l /dev/ttyS*)
Restart your machine and try the connection wizard once more. You should notice that your sound is now disabled and I really really hope that your modem starts to work for you.

Hi Matt,
I just received an e-mail from sony. They say that the modem installed in my notebook is a: Conexant Ambit 56 data/fax modem. So it seems that it actually is a conexant modem. Therefore I haven't removed the line in the conexanthsf-winmodem.pcimap file.
Done the rest as you said, my sound is disabled, but no sign of a modem
Then I reactivated the sound again.
But it still does not work....
This is what my dmesg looks like now:

I just received an e-mail from sony. They say that the modem installed in my notebook is a: Conexant Ambit 56 data/fax modem. So it seems that it actually is a conexant modem. Therefore I haven't removed the line in the conexanthsf-winmodem.pcimap file.
Done the rest as you said, my sound is disabled, but no sign of a modem
Then I reactivated the sound again.
But it still does not work....
This is what my dmesg looks like now:

Sorry for the slow reply , I somehow lost your response in the shuffle here. Thats good that you found out that it is a Connexant. It looks like the pt_serial and other drivers are still loading on system boot on your machine. Open the file /etc/devices/drivers as root and remove any line that looks like
XX pt_serial_SOMETHING
and run the command xangenmodules and restart the machine.
When you restart the machine, try running the command
/sbin/hsfconfig as root and see if it can find your modem.
Also, with the sound issues and potential conficts, I would recommend you install the ALSA sound update from Xandros Networks. The ALSA drivers are much less likely to conflict with the sound card than the ones shipping with Xandros 1.0. The ALSA installation directions are in the Sound forum here.
Keep us posted.
Sorry for the confusion about the type of modem.
Thanks
Matt |
