Hi,
My new machine is not functioning properly: to whit, it does not pass the "TuxRacer test" Video is choppy and does not flow evenly. Video hickups, ie: it will run 5 seconds, then pause 1 second, then repeat the process. I noticed the same problem when looking at mpeg video. (can't watch those old HitchHikers guide BBC TV episodes, but they run perfectly on my little Nokia 770 Linux hand-held. My guess would be configuration or a driver that is too old.
Here's some info:
Display
RADEON X300 Series with 256 mb on the card [Display adapter]
2.40 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
1024 Megabytes Installed Memory
Since this runs very well with windo$e and Kubuntu 6.04, it must be something fairly simple?
Has anyone formed a happy union between the Radeon X300 and Xandros?
Thanks,

Hi xbear!
Hope you had a nice new years!
I'm glad to see that someone else uses the Tux Racer test as do I!
I started with an ATI Radeon 7000 as my very first "high end" card, my boy gave it to me several years ago and it worked ok for me but didn't do really well on the Tux Racer test either. I traded it off to a guy for something don't remember what, and have gone with Nvidia since then.
ATI doesn't work very hard at supporting their cards in Linux in general, and Xandros is no exception.. Not many of them work well...
there may be some command line things that can be done, and one of the experts on this will probably be along in a while to address it...
Sorry I wasn't much help, but I couldn't resist the Tux Racer thing!
AIN'T xandros GREAT!

Hi Woodsmoke. Enjoyed your response. I have traced the "/root" of this problem to the most recent service pack for Xandros-4 I recently installed. It seems that it breaks the ATI driver somehow. I and others have experienced problems with choppy video on other ATI/Radeon video adapter models than mine. The good folks @ Xandros really need to address this issue as ATI is an extremely popular video adapter.
No one has had any suggestions on this, I am fixin' to git ready to install Kubuntu as I noticed that this problem does not occur even while using 'buntu live CDs. I might be leaving Xandros for a spell until they resolve this issue, but will still peruse the forums. As I am extremely busy, i need things to work. Too many other hobbies to indulge and research.

I resolved this issue. There was only one way to do it asthe problem manifested after installing the latest service pack.
Solution - radical - OS-ectomy.
Since the service pack causes the problem, it is important to install the OS and all the upgrades first. then reinstall the codecs you normally use, then install your preffered multimedia players. The above sequence is important or it wil bork again. Right now Xandros is my main OS again, but Kubuntu is fabulous. It does have a few problems, (more about that anothe time) but what OS doesn't. The one thing I wish Xandros had is an updated menu editor for KDE. The most recent version of the new KDE menu editor actually did everything it was told to. The version of the app in X-4 is not allways agreeable. Sometimes it can be a bit cranky. Kubuntu also has a lot (more) of repositories "metaverse" and "universe" are astounding in derth. Apt-get downloads smoothly and without problems.
