No, not played the game yet. Been trying to get Guild Wars installed in Xandros.

By default you can not install or run Windows games under any linux system. There are native ports such as Quake 4, UT2K4, Doom3 etc. but these are pretty rare.

For gaming you need to use Cedega. This is a project to create an OpenGL wrapper around the DirectX calls allowing linux systems to play games. It used to be called Winex and I believe some of this is still available open source - however the main program and the stuff that does the game playing is not free and must be bought on a subscription.

Now Cedega is not bad, and some games work very well - however there is one major caveot to this: it works well with nVidia graphics cards and the more modern and powerful the better. ATi cards are very badly supported and many of the games that are supposed to "work" actually don't work on ATi hardware.

Speaking from experience I could not get HL2 to run, but Max Payne 2 ran fine. I have an ATi Radeon 9700 Pro.

While Cedega can install many Windows games and some are even playable there is a steep learning curve with it... and if you have problems there will be a lot of hacking to try and get things running. Even then more obscure titles or those that aren't the current "hits" are unlikely to work. They have a game compatibility database here, but I wouldn't rely too heavily on the scores / results given as they are highly dependent on version of Cedega and hardware present.

There is a trial, so you can have a crack with it. I quite my sub after sheer frustration at not being able to play HL2 - a supposedly supported game. If you are really into your gaming though, stick to XP - it is just far less painful. In fact that is the only reason I still have a Windows partition - it is dedicated to gaming.

HTH, Dave

Don't forget that Wine itself has had some great advances in the last year or so and can run many games directly.

As last I saw the current version of cedega does support BF2.
I know I play all my BF1 games on it! Smile

Since your question isn't very specific, I'll have to guess that you already have logged into the transgaming site, gone to prepackaged files and downloaded the .deb package of Cedega. Otherwise, that's what you're going to have to do before starting.

Make sure you have Xandros unsupported source checked in XN, otherwise The Cedega .deb can't install... To do that, open XN, go to Edit > Select Application Sources and tick the Debian Unsupported Site and then Click OK. Then double-click the cedega file to install it, Close XN when you are done, and you should be ready.

Once it is installed, go to Launch > Applications > Games > Transgaming Cedega and it should take you from there..

As an aside, here are some tips that will make it easier for us to help you in the future, and will make it easier for you to find that information.

1. Please be more specific. The more info you give us, the more competent an answer we can give you.
2. Please don't double post. Its a waste of effort on both your and our parts, and clutters the searches, requiring more people to post, further cluttering searches, etc.. etc...

Hope this helps.

Hello and thank you for your help, unfurtunately I was not successful installing cedega......

This is the information I have,

I am trying to install, cedega-small_5.2.3_all.deb

is the only deb file that I could find in the transgame website plus is the lastest revision....

the errors I am getting is as follows

dpkg-deb: unexpected end of file in version number in ./cedega-small_5.2.3_all.deb
Couldn't call dpkg-deb on ./cedega-small_5.2.3_all.deb: , skipping package
dpkg-deb: unexpected end of file in version number in cedega-small_5.2.3_all.deb
dpkg-deb: unexpected end of file in version number in cedega-small_5.2.3_all.deb
Couldn't find package
Done.

I did as you recommended, I will type my steps and perhaps you can see what I am doing incorrect

1. launched XN
2. clicked on EDIT and than on set application sources
3. uncheck supported files and checked unsupported files
4. than I ran the software and as you can see I was getting the error above...

again, thank you for any help....

Hmmm. redrum did not tell you to uncheck the supported repository, just to enable the unsupported one. Just my $.02 Canadian, I'm not running Cedega here.

Yes, sorry for the confusion... You will want both repositories checked... Additionally, it appears your copy of cedega may be corrupted. You will want to re download it before installing.

again, thank you for everyones help....

I did follow the steps as required.... and nothing....

I like a challenge and this has been a challenge...

I have finally successfully installed Cedega. I had to install Cedega 5.2.7 which is not the latest version. the .7 version installed right away and after it was finished it updated to the latest version...

perhaps what I went through may help someone out there....

Cool

Good you got it working Smile It should update to the latest version automatically anyways, so you shouldn't miss out on anything installing the older version.

Were you perhaps trying to install the local UPDAT and not the full deb package?
The reason I ask is I just installed 4.0 then sp1 then enabled the unsupported repositories and my cedega installed fine.

But Im glad you got it working! Welcome to even more Games on linux!
