Yesterday I worked out how to solve a problem I've been having with my Internet. It seemed to take forever loading webpages but downloading large files/programs was ok.
I got help from a person at the Melbourne Linux Users group and I think this is worth noting and trying if other people have this problem as it is easily reversible and totally fixed my problem.
Here is what I needed to do:
Open Console in Administrator (Root) and type:
NOTE: If you've never typed this in before, do it now, even if you have no networking problems, it brings up a really nifty X-tree GOLD / Norton Commander-type prgram where you can view all your files and edit them etc.
In the 'Midnight commander" go up to the top directory called / by double clicking on the already highlighted top line until you are in / and the first folder is called
Now just go down to
and then into
and open the file called This is done by pressing
F4 or hitting 'edit'.
You will be presented with a file which reads like this:
| Quote: |
Aliases to tell insmod/modprobe which modules to use
Uncomment the network protocols you don't want loaded:
|
Find | Quote: | | #alias net-pf-10 off |
and change it to | Quote: | | alias net-pf-10 off | That is, uncheck it. You may also need to uncheck "IPv6" but this can be tested once you have rebooted and checked whether the internet is better or not.
Now restart the computer. This is not really necessary if you know how to restart the network, but just disconnecting and reconnecting didn't do it, so restarting the computer is your best bet.
Now try and do some web browsing
I hope this helps other people who have had the same issue - my internet is perfect now

Claire,
Thank you for that tip. I am sorry that no one has replied to you sooner. When I first tried "mc" this morning, I forgot to change directories to "/". I was searching around /home and, of course, could not see /etc. While I was at work today, I thought about it and realised that I had to change directory. Initially, when I typed su root and then put in my admin password, I was in /home/jim.
All that was required was cd /
When I arrived home from work, I tried again and this time was able to make the change that you suggested.

Yep, thanks for mentioning that. I had forgotten to say that you need to go up a directory first when you have opened mc (I will edit the posts now). Thanks Jim
Did you notice any difference? |
