As you fellow Xandros gamers might have noticed I have not been prowling the forums as much as I used to. About a year ago I began a project that at first was just an attempt to increase the number of maps for Legends. Well one thing lead to another and now I am learning how to create maps for Legends.
As some of you already know Legends is a cross platform game that plays well in Xandros and was inspired by Tribes.

If you are interested in seeing some pictures of my mapping efforts go to: http://gallery.filefront.com/lpbbear/

To download the latest BTMappack for Legends go to: http://hosted.filefront.com/lpbbear

Legends itself can be downloaded from http://www.legendsthegame.net

My server, BearTown, is still up and running and is listed in the master server list in Legends. It is running a modded version of Legends as I do not care for the stock physics and weapons settings.

If you are running an older copy of Legends you should do an update. The older versions do not have the correct master server listed and you will NOT see any servers at all with the older versions.

Hi to all the XPFers out there. Loved playing with you guys. Smile

BTW, I'm still using Xandros. (WooHoo!) Smile

Just an update to my fellow Xandros gamers regarding the BTMappack. Last week I released version 1.03-7 at the same site as already listed.
Those of you who liked Tribes may find this newer version fun. I and another player, "Krun", have been working on a series of maps that are an attempt to recreate many of the great Tribes 1 favorite maps. Those maps are in this latest version. Give em a try. WooHoo! Smile

Hi fellow gamers. I have released another update to the BTMappack for Legends, version 1.04.

This version is much smaller and cleaner. It slices, it dices, it wastes tons of precious hours that you could be spending with your family or getting wealthier!

Anyway it is available form the usual sites

http://hosted.filefront.com/lpbbear
(the full zipped version)

or the basic .unf file version.

http://www.legendsthegame.net
(in the Downloads/Maps and Missions area)

This version also features a few maps with some of my own modeling work.

Hope you enjoy it.

Does the full Debian installer work in Xandros?
Dependencies seem fairly easy to meet from what I can tell. Smile

The debian installer worked just fine on my X4.1. I also downloaded and copied over the extra maps Lpbbear had mentioned - they are all capture the flag maps incase anyone is curious.
I haven't played Legends in quite awhile, so I'll have to give it another go sometime.

It installs very well...
I've added it to the geekconnection.org repository along with many more applications last night.

Can any deb packaging gurus package up some maps so they will install into the correct directory for users?
I'd be glad to put them in the repository... Very Happy

Upon starting Legends for the first time Legends will create a hidden directory (.legends) in the users home directory that contains all player config settings and custom files, such as maps. To see this directory Xandros users would have to enable hidden files" in the file manager. The BTMappack .unf file is supposed to be copied to this area.

The .unf file that is contained in the downloadable zip version of the mappack should be copied to:

/home/yourusername/.legends/legends/

Please take note of the dot in .legends.

The mappack contains custom maps. I am not sure if its possible to create a .deb file that installs to the correct folder in a users home directory. Maybe so but I leave that to someone who knows how to package debs properly.

BTW, in case anyone is interested in creating custom maps for Legends there is a builtin map editor in Legends. The editor works fine in the Linux version of Legends and you can create your own custom maps with it. It can be accessed by hitting alt+e while in host mode in the game.
The BTMappack was created in Linux and other than using Hammer in Windows for model creation, all other content for the mappack was created in Linux. Hammer does not yet run in Wine. It almost does but not yet. Maybe in a future version of Wine. GTKRadiant does run in Linux and some users are reporting success with using it for creating models for Legends in Linux.

(you might want to look at creating a deb version of GTKRadiant for Xandros users if one does not already exist)

Legends is based on Garage Game's Torque game engine which is the same engine that was used for Tribes 2. There is quite a bit of info around the Internet on map creation for Tribes 2 and much of it applies to Legends as well. There is also some information at http://www.legendsthegame.net on map creation for Legends in the forums and other areas on the site.

PostPosted: Tue Feb 02, 2010 12:08 pm    Post subject: BTMappack-1.05-3b1 Released Reply with quote

Some here on the forum may remember my involvement with Linux gaming. I am still involved and have continued working on the "BTMappack" for the last several years. As well as maintaining the mappack I have also moved into creating a number of my own maps. Even though the mappack is "cross platform" my main focus has been and will always be doing this as a contribution to Linux gamers. Windows users can use it as well but they are just hitching a ride on my work. This is really meant for Linux users.

Below is a copy/paste of the announcement for the latest release.

Even though I think Xandros is a dead end, those of you still gaming in Xandros and Linux are always welcome.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have released the latest version of the BTMappack. The version is BTMappack-1.05-3b1. Here is the final list of changes that were done prior to release.

12/20/09

Updated CanyonCrusadeBT and CanyonCrusadeBTNR (change in mis file to hopefully correct forcefield not open after generators down)

1/9/2010

Updated FinalFrontierBTt1 to t3
Updated MoonbaseBT-LGt1 to t3
Updated MoonsideBT-LGt1 to t2
Updated StardustBT-LGt1 to t2

1/13/2010

Added DogboneLakeBT (fixed version with corrected in base forcefields and fixed terrain gaps on Alpha Base)
Added AxedBT (OOBs extended to more playable distance from bases)

There were also a number of small fixes and adjustments that are not mentioned in the changelog. They were mostly just corrections for small errors in the maps, nothing major.

Even though this is a finished version of the mappack I am calling this a "beta". This does not mean it is not feature complete and playable. It is and all maps are of decent quality. The reason I am calling it a beta is because for several maps I have additional changes and additions that there simply was not enough time in my personal and work life to complete before release. Since I did not want many of the new maps to just "sit in the can" awaiting those additional changes I decided to go ahead and wrap up what was finished and release it. You should consider THIS to be the actual current mappack and replace all old versions with this one.

On to whats new in this version of the mappack:

New Maps

ArdenaBT (Knochensage, converted to CTF by me)
An excellent small map by Knochensage. Good for small numbers of players to large.

AxedBT (Legends Devs, OOBs extended to more playable distance from bases)
A correction for a long standing and annoying oversight in the maps OOB settings.

AzraelBTt3 (me)
Referenced in the following post thread. More changes in a future version on this map.

BloodMoonBTt1 (me, based on an evolved idea from Defender)
Set on an alien planet. More changes in a future version on this map. Referenced here.

DM_DeathlyQuietBT (Wraith plus Legends Devs, converted from CTF by me)
A very "Quake" style map and much like DM maps you would see in that game.

DM_GuhlBT (Knochensage, converted to Deathmatch by me)
Another great map from Knochensage. The best DM map in Legends in my opinion.

DM_HeliousBT (Knochensage, converted to Deathmatch by me)
Also a great map from Knochensage.

DM_HorusBT (Diskreet, converted from CTF by me)
A conversion to DM from the CTF version. Something like the empty terrain DM maps in Legends but a little more playable.

DogboneLakeBT (Legends Devs/Pak with various fixes by me)
Fixes for several long standing errors in the map.

FinalFrontierBTt3 (me)
A map set in space with the teams bases separated by a field of crystal like asteroids. Also a lower gravity map. More changes in a future version on this map. (server admins see note below)

GuhlBT (Knochensage, converted to CTF by me)
A very high intensity CTF conversion of another of Knochensages great maps. Works with small numbers of players and goes absolutely bonkers as player numbers climb.

MoonbaseBT-LGt3 (me, based on original version from Defender)
Set on a "moon" like planet. Also a lower gravity map. More changes in a future version on this map. (server admins see note below)

MoonsideBT-LGt2 (me, somewhat based on a different map from Defender using the Tribes 1 "Broadside" style)
Set on a "moon" like planet. Also a lower gravity map. More changes in a future version on this map. (server admins see note below)

NerebusBT (Knochensage, converted to CTF by me)
A really nice map by Knochensage, great stand in for the "Ocular" type of map.

OldBigOneBT (based on the original Legends Dev version removed from Legends a while back)
A revival of what I considered the better version of "Big One" before it was revised.

ParanosBT (Knochensage, converted to CTF by me)
A really nice map by Knochensage, also a great stand in for the "Ocular" type of map.

StardustBT-LGt1 (me, based on original version from Defender)
Set on a "moon" like planet. Also a lower gravity map. More changes in a future version on this map. (server admins see note below)

StonehengeBTt1 (me plus Legends Devs, inspired by original Tribes version)
An attempt by me to bring into the game a map somewhat closer feeling to the original "Stonehenge" from Tribes 1. This plays MUCH faster than Monolith does. More changes in a future version on this map.

There are 123 maps in this version of the mappack. Thats quite a jump from the old version.

Various Map Fixes

ArenaGuhlBT (corrected lava layer)
CanyonCrusadeBT (change in mis file to correct forcefield not shutting off after generators down with Base Rape)
CanyonCrusadeBTNR (change in mis file to correct forcefield not shutting off after generators down with Base Rape)
CitadelsBTv1 (small placement correction)
DangerousCrossingBTv1 (terrain fixes)
DayFallsBTv1 (small placement correction)
DustDevilBTv2/DustDevilBTMissilev2 (lowered visibility to increase player performance)
FirestormBT (small adjustments)
IslandHopBT (terrain correction)
MynarisBT (added generators to each teams base to allow for base rape in ctf)
NightOnSummitMtnBT (fixed incorrect light on skiramp model and terrain fixes)
NightShiftBT (small terrain corrections)
RainFallsBTv1 (small placement correction)
SeptimusPrimeBT (fixed flagstand model, small terrain corrections)
SkiSummitMtnBT (fixed incorrect light on skiramp model and terrain fixes)

Note To Legends Dev Team:
There are a number of maps in the mappack that are based on existing stock Legends maps. I would like nothing better than to remove them from the mappack. Were I to see some movement on moving the fixes contained in the mappack versions into the stock Legends versions you would make me a happy camper. Let me know.

Note to Server Admins regarding Low Gravity Maps:
Your server may not be set correctly for Low Gravity maps. If that is the case your server will ignore the -39 gravity setting in the map and use only the default -45 setting. This will eliminate the feeling of "low gravity" for players in the LG maps. Please check that the following line is in your prefs file:

$pref::Server::ForceDefaultGravity = 0;

Note to Players regarding old versions:
If you have been playing Legends for a while you are likely to have old copies of the mappack and other old files hanging around your copy of Legends. If you experience problems such as not being able to connect to a server with error messages kicking you off check that you don't have any old files left in your copy of Legends. Remove these files as they may cause conflicts with the current mappack.

To download this newest version of the mappack go to:

http://www.filefront.com/user/lpbbear

Download the file called "BTMappack-1.05-3b1.zip"

I assume TerroX will have the smaller "unf" version in the Legends downloads area soon also.

At this time the BV Clan servers will resume running this released version of the current BTMappack while BearTown resumes running any new test maps that come along in the future.

If you are a mapper who would like to get your map in circulation please contact me about how to submit your work. Unfortunately, because of the amount of time and effort this requires I doubt there will be another mappack release for some time. In any event your contributions are welcome.

Thats it for this version. If you are interested in contributing to the mappack, please contact me. That can be maps, models, textures etc, but they should be your own creations. Not ripped from your favorite game.

Please read the unfinished mappack guidelines before submitting.

http://legendsthegame.net/community/...mappack:readme

Thanks to all of you who patiently sat through all the downloads during the testing phases of these maps.

While I am here I thought I might as well mention that I released an updated version of the BTMappack for Legends. As well Legends itself went though a major update a while back.

Below is a copy paste from the Legends forum.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

As some may have noticed the new version of Legends is now available.

(note there have been a few updates since the above so check the Legends forums for more info before downloading)

Also available is the 1.06 version of the BTMappack.

http://legendsthegame.net/files/maps/BTMappack-1.06.unf

Here is the final changelog for the 1.06 version of the mappack.

7/7/2011

Added LightCTF_EgyptBT (LightCTF version of EgyptBT)
Added Rabbit_EgyptBT (Rabbit version of EgyptBT)
Added War_EgyptBT (War version of EgyptBT)
Added Hoard_EgyptBT (Hoard version of EgyptBT)

There are a few rough edges here and there in this new version but most of it is fine and quite playable.

When Winter sets in around here I will resume work on the next version of the BTMappack which will be 1.06-1. I don't expect that to be finished until next spring at the earliest. 1.06 will be the current version of the mappack.
(added note, this has not happened as planned due to schedule issues, eventually)

A lot of work went into this version of the mappack......did I mention A LOT OF WORK?

I hope you all enjoy it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, I was involved in some of the pre-release work on this version of Legends. I worked on map cleanup and testing for this version.

Gaming is still very much alive on the Linux platform. You don't have to use Windows anymore to game on the PC.
