Hi,
Since XN rather often is not very cooperative (not reachable or not loading at all) and XU seems to have the same functionality (both being frontends for apt-get), I wonder if XN and XU are identical (content-wise)? XU seems to work much more reliably than XN.
Anyone?

I tend to use XU more often than XN. At this point its just lighter and faster than XN. On the other hand I don't think we have seen anything close to what Xandros has in mind for the XN system. Time will expose those plans I suppose. I see interesting little hints here and there but nothing definite yet. |

| Not sure, Ko, but my guess is that it seems as if XN only has the xandros-specific packages you'll see way at the bottom of your software package list in XU. |

CaptK: No it just depends on how you set your source list, you can get all the Debian software with XN as well.
I'm *not* positive, but I believe that when you change the source list with *either* XN or XU, that you really change the apt-get source list, so your source list should always be the same, even if you use both apps from time to time..

| I gave up on XN some time ago but I went back to it yesterday (I had been having some trouble refreshing the package lists). On a whim I unchecked the installation CD and debian sources, and for the first time in ages I got a fresh list of the Xandros packages. |

I've run into problems before when the installation CD is checked & the CD is not in the drive. Can't recall, but I believe it will return error messages, since it can't read the CD.
It *would* be nice if it would just ask for the CD at that point, instead.

I agree. The reason for this is in the way that the xandros cd is added to the sources.list file. I would suggest unchecking the current xandros cd entry (through Xandros update or Xandros Networks). Then, with the Xandros cd in the first CD-ROM issue the following command from an Administrator Console: apt-cdrom add -d /var/autofs/cdrom.1/cdrom.1
Then, when a package from the Xandros CD is needed it'll prompt you for the cd, just put the cd in the first CD-ROM.
Hope you find this helpfull

Cool tip, I just leave the CD unchecked unless I am specifically trying to get something off the CD (which is pretty seldom these days). Then I change to CD only in my source list & update the list.
Seems to work OK, although it's a bit of a pain when I do need the CD.

It seems that the biggest difference between XN and XU is that some package related comments visible on XN are not displayed at all in XU.
This made a difference in the last package updates, because through XN you could see some warnings about Mozilla package upgrade that were not accessible through XU.
IMHO, if they relay on these comments to avoid people making mistakes during the package upgrade, then XU is not a good choice. |

| When using XU for updates, I look down at the bottom in the description section. There, in small print, are the details. It's possible there was a "gotcha" that I just happened not to install, but I didn't have any problems with the update. |

Solangie,
There is a warning about updating Mozilla if you have Evolution installed on your system. Apparently it doesn't show up with XU?
