Hey guys I am brand new to Linux. I bought my copy of Xandros Home Premium 4.0 I beleive, a few years ago and finally got tired of Windows mainly Vista after a bad crash. So I am happy I can view my files but when trying to get on the internet is an entire different story.

I originally was having a problem with my user account, so I logged into my admin (root) account and I noticed my wifi was working perfect. I was doing an SP1 update when the computer froze so I turned it off well that screwed things up so now I can't connect to the internet and when I would click on configure or create a connection I would get a "signal 11".

So I went ahead and reinstalled linux over it self and here I am still with no internet connection.

This is the message I receive when trying to connect:

Configuring interface eth1=lan1 (inet)
run-parts --verbose /etc/network/if-pre-up.d
Starting WEP wireless connection...
ifconfig $lFACE up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device
Failed to bring up lan1.

-----

I've been at this issue for about a good 12 hours and finally decided to boot up my laptop and see what you guys would think and hopefully someone could help me out with this issue.

I really appreciate it,
Joe (noob2linux)

ps don't know if this is relevant or not but I typed ifconfig in console and only eth0 and lo show up eth1 isn't popping up...hmmm.

It hasn't found your card. If it found it before then the possibility of failure of the card seems possible.

Open a console and type 'su', or open an admin console. You'll need your admin password. Then type 'ifconfig'. Post the output for eth entry, i.e. eth0, eth1. We might be able to figure it out with you. [/code]

Sure, in admin account in the shell I typed ifconfig and I got eth0 and then lo

Also, the card is still good lights are going and when I first installed linux I could see my routers SSID then when I did the reinstall of linux I again could see my routers SSID and then it stopped showing up.

Hi noob2linux and welcome to Xandros user forums!

"Desktop Home Premium 4.0" used kernel 2.6.15 while "SP1" and "SP2"
used kernel 2.6.18. These where all built on (obselete) "Debian Sarge".

Your H/W may work better with "4.5". It uses kernel 2.6.24 and is built
on (old stable) "Debian Etch". Which means better compability with newer
applications and software. Download it here: http://www.geekconnection.org/
Downloads > Xandros Downloads > Xandros OCE ISO Files
Recommends the updated and bugfixed CD version.

Thanks for the help!

-Joe

PS Now this is just crazy I started up my PC and what do you know my wifi is working fine and it's connected to my router. I still want to download and install this update but I am just amazed hehe.

Well, I burned the iso and then put it in my computer and it started up I installed things off the CD that weren't already installed, even firefox which didn't update. I also go SP1 off the Network and now when I scroll down a page it goes very slow almost laggy. But the internet is still working. I just need to figure this issue out and learn how to install things.

Assumes the "update" is an fresh "4.5" install over the old one.
Tha "lagging" is probably an driver issue. What brand and model
is your video card?

Redrum has compiled drivers for XD4.5:
http://www.vogelefamily.info/xandros//nvidia/4.5/

The same ones are mirrored at http://www.piratesladd.com/ :
http://www.piratesladd.com/repository/drivers/xandros45/xandros-nvidia-modules/

Heres howto install drivers in XD4.0-4.2:
http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=30824
Similar methods can be used in XD4.5.
