Anything extra that you think we can throw in it (besides a kitchen sink).

I'm going to keep this sticky for the next week or so.

Any chance on porting this to Xandros 3.0? I have Xandros 3.0.3 BE and I would love to have a taskbar applet to easily choose a wifi connection without having to do it from the control panel.

Right click on network connections in control panel then click on add to main panel. That should work.

Hard wired connection was just automatic. No problems. I found the easiest way to get the wireless connection established was to go through the Wizard process. First time connection to my wireless at home I had to turn SSID broadcast ON in the router.

Subsequently, I've been to several client locations and logged on effortlessly to their wi-fi networks.

One little bug is the wi-fi icon currently has a red stop sign on it yet all is well. Every now and then it changes briefly to show signal strength.

Now you're asking .... <g>

I would prefer a tab on top of the "filelist" in FileManager

(and then rename it to something more marketing-friendly
such <g> as DRM = Digital Resources Manager)

That tab would be called Network Profiles instead of Network Connection Applet. Why the renaming and relocation? Allow me first to explain how a typical working day looks at this side.

In the morning the laptop is fired up to check if everything has been running smoothly everywhere while I was "away". If I then relocate to a customers site later on I need a complete other set of networking settings both for the motherboard LAN-card, the motherboard Wifi and sometimes the PCMCIA-Lan-card.

In the course of the day I may relocate again (sometimes even more) and on the way home I may drop in into the office. When I finally arrive at home I may have to arrange for selecting yet another combination of networking settings. That is cumbersome, to say the least.

So I would prefer to have this tab at the file-manager opening a window with some tabs: "Hardware" (detected and installed networking HW and its properties); Statistics (Monitors for all HW and connections) and Profiles.

The last is a pre-arranged set named after the location and perhaps the sub-set of wanted settings in that location. A container for HW to be switched in or disabled, the settings of that HW, the protocols to be available, the VPN, the drives to be shared, printers etc. etc.

Meaning that ... after the initial setup has been done and tested once I am only a two or three clicks away of using the network and internet where-ever I am. For something like that under Windows look (yes, again at Globesofts MultiNetworkManager). Please, I beg you. Make it as easy as using the kitchensink ....

kindest regards
from Leeuwarden

Well, I had read these were the friendliest Linux user forums on the Internet, however did not see one attempt to help me with this. So I decided to go out and try to find my own paths to migrate this laptop from Win XP to Xandros.

I found on SourceForge a reference to NetEnv in Debian.

From there I found (Google is our friend):

http://packages.debian.org/stable/admin/netenv.html

and two pages I looked at to confirm it could do what I need to be able to go over to X4:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/configure-your-linux-system-for-different-network-environments-at-an-office-and-a-home.html

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/sysadmin-guide/s1-network-profiles.html

Nobody knew about this? Or are there any "gotcha's" involved in implementing this?

kindest regards

I am having trouble with the PPTP VPN connection. I need to connect to 8 different VPNs, all of which have 3Com routers which also are the PPTP servers for the sites. I use all of the default options, except I disable the encryption. (I didn't have to disable encryption with Windoes XP but I do with Vista.) I am connecting to the sites according to the router logs but I am unable to connect to the equipment at the sites using the Firefox browser.

I also tried the PPTP-Linux program but I haven't been able to get the companion pptpconfig program to work in Xandros Desktop Home Edition - Premium.

I finally got my VPN connection to work by a trial-and-error modification of the configuration files in /etc/ppp/peers. I had to comment out the "nodeflate" option, apparently the PPTP server in the routers is doing some sort of compression.

I also had to comment out "require mppe". I also had to disable encoding in Windows Vista but not in Windows XP. I could also have done this in "Network Connections" instead of editing the file.

There is a configuration file in /etc/ppp/peers for each VPN, named vpn1, vpn2, ...

The network wizard doesn't find my bluetooth DUN connection. I created a DUN connection over my bluetooth phone ( Kyocera Strobe )using wvdial but as the network wizard does not see it I have no way to easily setup internet sharing. Is there a way to make the network wizard recognize the connection or the device? If not this is a feature that should definately be added in future releases.

I'm running X4sp1 Home Premium. The wizard itself is easy to use for my needs. However, in practice it doesn't work very well. I've had consistent - and lately continuous - problems connecting to my wireless LAN.

When I try to connect my computer freezes, and I'm forced to Alt-Sysreq-B to reboot it. No other Sysreq combos work to kill processes and unfreeze. Initially I configured my system to connect automatically, but it would freeze up every time. I disabled the auto-connect, and since then I've had intermittent freeze-up problems when I connect manually.

I've posted about this issue a few times:

http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=30625&highlight=

http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=30640&highlight=

The consensus seems to be that this is a kernel problem. That may be the case, but whatever the problem is, it's related to the internet connection process because that's the only common denominator in my frequent system freeze ups.

It seems Xandros 4.1 is not able to use eth0 and eth1 on a nForce 680i (MSI P6N).

Xandros found them - connect with them - but there is still no working WWW Connection with any Internetapplication. The Connection seems to be only a Dummy. No Errormessages.

I have used a direct Connection without DHCP to my AVM Router.
All other Distribution (Ubuntu 7.04, PCLinuxOS, Mandriva Spring 2007, openSUSE 10.2) did not make any Problems on the same way of WWW Connection.

I have had trouble getting a D-Link DWL-g510 to work with other Distros.
without any luck, supported cards are few and far between. However, with
Xandros v4 I have been able to get connected using WEP, the only problem
is when I reboot the connection hangs "pending", all done as root. Then if I delete the connection and create it again it works again.

I have read in another message that a hidden SSID could be the problem ?

Any ideas, thanks.

I just posted a lengthy description of things I've tried to get my wireless card to work with Xandros Professional Desktop v.4 (XPD4)--

XDP 4 ( the previous version) operated my wireless card very well, once I loaded the Win XP driver into NDIS wrapper. XPD4 will not accept the drivers. As nearly as I can tell, it just plain doesn't work.

I AM able to get to the internet by plugging a cable into the laptop...

Summary:
1) Xan Desktop Premium v.4 used to run my wireless card.
2) Xan Pro Desktop v.4 does not run my wireless card.
3) Win XP (on my dual-boot system) runs my wireless card.

For additional details, see my post of 8/25/07 entitled something like,
'ndis wrapper does not accept wireless win driver.'

Let me know if you have a solution for this problem-- And feel free to send me an email if you need more information.

All the best,

Trent T

I seem to be having some issues, although I can use Thunderbird and Mozilla fine, I cannot seem to get XN to connect. I'm using a hard-wired connection to router through TW cable modem.

This is especially annoying since I was hoping to find and updated driver for my nvidia dual head video card, it shows the same desktop on both screens, but the display manager only shows one monitor. From reading the forums, it seems that my card (GeForce 7950 if I recall correctly) is supposed to be auto-detected in 4 Premium (just d/l Monday).
