Firstly a warm welcome to our forums. Many of us think this is a very friendly place.
Your question doesn't give quite enough information in order to be able to answer you. I was left in some doubt about your aims.

Howdy Jim. Nice to meet you. Thanks for the kind response, I appreciate it.

My aims are not diabolical here. I primarily develop on the Windows platform so I'm not well read with respect to the Linux universe. While conversing with some buddies elsewhere, we've been trying to unravel the license agreement for the Open Circulation Edition. My take is that one can not develop for profit on this particular edition. Others disagree.
After emailing Xandros Support with this question:
'Hello. Windows user here. I've a question about the Open Circulation Edition. Can I develop for profit with this version?'
Their response was:
'Dear Sir, The Open Circulation edition allows for personal, non-commercial use and for business purposes only if you are a Developer. You can refer to the following link to check how our product are licensed.
http://support.xandros.com/kb-view.php?topic=8'
So, I followed the URL, where I read the same.
Its the wording that seems to be tripping me up here... Here's the question I'm attempting to have answered:
Can I develop and deploy software for profit with the Open Circulation Edition?
If another edition of Xandros is the anwser then so be it. I seek the plain truth. No axes to grind, I have kids to feed.
Thanks for your help. |

You can develop any kind of software using the OCE, with one catch.
The Qt license restrictions disallow you from developing a Qt-based application without first purchasing a license from Trolltech. That means you can't develop a commercial Qt-based application, including any and all KDE-based applications, without first purchasing a license from Trolltech, regardless of which distro you use.
What you can't do with Xandros OCE is redistribute a modified version of the distribution. So, if your commercial product involves redistributing Xandros OCE, then you're doing something wrong.
If all you're doing is using Xandros OCE as a development platform for a commercial software product that can be redistributed standalone, go right ahead. On the other hand, if you're expecting to make a profit the less than $100 for Xandros Premium would be more than worth it, since it comes with development tools on CD and there's no ambiguity. That's what I use.
I am not a lawyer, though. |

If you are interested in selling a linux distro, I would start
with a free program that has no propriety (sp?) software
in it. Xandros use propriety (sp?) softwares and you may
have legal problem(s) with those companies (don't know???).
Just my 2 cents.
