I have set up many linux distros . on a lot of different boxes and find Xandros to be a superior system as far as ease of setup and newbie users being able to have a great forum to use to solve problems .Im no hacker ,I just love to solve problems on any mechanical level . I have noticed many distros use KDE by default and I have no problems . I want to completly disable any program that tries to use an internet connection with out my having started the connection . I do not care for cd lookups and I know a lot of people use these databases and really like them . I cannot find a way to stop the cddb program from interupting my enjoyment of my own cd's !I already know what songs or music I'm playing and dont feel the need for a lot of wasted I/O and drivespace created by programs I don't want ! Under sound in control panel with open circulation edition Xandros I can click on cache, cache+remote or simply remote I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone went to so much trouble to log any cd that is played on our systems . I feel this is my bussiness and no others . So why cant I just unclivck cache and remove the ports and address and just disable this windos type spyware ? _________________ Have a nice day ! |

Here is what I just tried and it seems to have worked.
In control center open Sound & Multimedia >>CDDB Retrieval. In Cache Folders, hightlight the default folder and delete it, then select Cache only under mode and apply. I just tried it with a commercially pressed CD and it just play the CD with nothing else happening.
i hope this helps, _________________ Ed Richards

Thanks For helping me with the cddb problem ! It's funny that I did the exact same thing on three different installs and the program was still confusing me . This last time I got a popup window just above the taskbar every time I put in a cd .The popup looked like a small player with arrow type widgets for forward and reverse like a vcr , only it said in the middle between the buttons
"CDDB LOOKUP" . Clicking on the buttons had no effect and simply locked the machine in a loop that couldn't access the cdrom or make an internet conection. All this after removing the base address for the cache and remote
lookup .Wouldn't It make a lot more sense to call this program as a seperate
process and only start it when you want to use it ?, like E-Mail , and here is another program that is linked to this cddb, smtp. I didn't want a link to my E-Mail for cddb Yet here another popup complains that I havn't properly set up smtp protocols for a service I never Initiated ! Xandros still rocks and as soon as I find a job I'm going to purchase the best version I can afford !Now if I could just put an Icon of my cdrom on the desktop with a dropdown menu like say SUSE that would include eject , or play . So far the only way I could figure how to do this was with creating a shortcut to /var/autofs/cdrom and another for the eject program . Is this because this is the free version , or as a rule in general ,the OS does not display your drives on the desktop ?
Thanks again and also Thanks for letting me post with only the open circulation edition . _________________ Have a nice day ! |

Wow!! Just found this obviously old thread, which is exactly what I was looking for.
I also love Xandros, but you can only imagine how angry I was a short time ago, after actually enjoying my sound working so good,
in my videos, my system sounds, mp3s,( and CD player while in root) to find when checking my email online that I have two letters that have been labeled:"Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" !!
I never authorized anyone or anything to be allowed to send email anyplace, especially with all of the titles of the songs on the compiled CD that I tried out when sound began to work.
Pissed barely describes my feelings about this email that was composed and sent, without my knowledge or permission.
Besides dealing with this email, now I am not allowed to access, my CD player for whatever reason with out an NFS server being turned on!
I have been in root and turned on all the permissions possible, for that drive, and still no luck.
And yep, I am ignorant enough still to not know where the hell this NFS server is to turn on.
From what I have found on this subject so far about an NFS server says to set it up I have to go throug setting up internet connections , etc. just to access my own CD rom?!??
I don't know which is more unbelievable here!! The fact that I can't get to my own CD... (which I am sure I'll figure out at some point in time, or that my privacy has been privacy has been abused as far as I see it, by sending out info I never authorized about the CDs that have been played or tried to auto play upon putting them in my machine!
This is really almost smelling like windows media player and it's totally innnocent permissions to go online unknown to the user, unless it is of course "fixed" by the user before it does.
I hate that sneaking crap about MS and , I just can't get over that Xandros doesn't include any information or , options regarding this
use of my internet /email account . As good as the enhtire l;ayou of Xandros is, I am quite shocked to have had to find and fix this ridiculous feature, in this OS.
I really hope don't get anymore surprises like this in the future.
You learn to finally trust and this is the reward??
At least I caught it fairly early on. |

I'm using Xandros version 3 standard.
the player is the "CD Player" that came with the OS.
Now I have rebooted again only to find I get a sound as it boots into Xandros, but have no sound for anything else, as I did before, not even when logged in as root.
This is back to the way it was this morning again.
Thre's no such thing as alsamixer , even in root, as it vanishes after rebooting.
If I run the console as root, and run the entire alsaconf allover again, it will work, and I can logout , and login as the other user, it even works, with the exception of the CD Player that I can't use. Funny i gives me permission to play mp3s from an old windows XP drive , but says I have to run a NFS server or have permission to run CD player on my CD rom, from my non root login.
found some "help" last night that gave a command to run after running the alsaconf process, I forgot the name of it but it was to save the settings so they would be thre after rebooting.
Thing is I gave the command and it never responded in any way to it.
This is getting very old.
About to give up on the ISA card and try a PCI card since I read others had problems with them somewhere.
I just thought since it was working I had gotten around the problems, if any existed.
If that CD player does that again with the PCI card, I'm really gonna be pissed.
I do not have time for this at all. I'm already going to hav eto resort to an older windows machine here to write checks over this "easy to use system".
Thanks for the help. |
