|
|
On the Desktop Premium Ver. 4, I cannot get sound from Altec Lansing XT2 speakers. They work fine on Windows XP and OSX. They work through USB and not the sound card. They are detected in Hardware Dection - says:
Description: "Altec Lansing XT2 - USB AUdio"
Driver: "yealink"
Driver loaded: "yes"
BUS type; "USB"
When I hookup some old crappy speakers through a Creative Soundcard, I get the crappy sound from them. So I know the sound sysytem works.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

As nobody has responded I may as well share a previous experience of a pair of USB headphones in xandros 3. I had the same problem as your speakers, completely dead, because xandros was trying to find a device on the board rather than a usb device. Presumably in your case, it is trying to find speakers coming from your sound card rather than a usb port.
My fix was to alter 2 settings in Control center>Sound & Multimedia>Sound system>Hardware. Check the box marked 'override device location' and enter value /dev/sound/dsp## where ## is the highest number listed in that directory. Secondly, check the box marked 'use other custom options' and enter a value -a oss. Click the apply button and then click the tab 'General' and use the test sound button to see what happens.
I hope this is of some help. It may not be applicable to speakers and I don't know much about hardware problems! |

David, in my case, it worked as you said: the test works fine. But then, in Music Manager and Xine (same engine) there is no sound, but the small ones in the laptop. Any idea?
Thanx |

Hi Camo,
Please post the contents of the /proc/asound/cards file on your system. This will tell me how the sound devices are configured in your system.
Thanks,
Matt |

| Thank you. I finally made it work changing KDE sound configuration to call dsp1, instead of dsp. |

Hi Matt,
I have the same problem with usb speakers that davidwrigley was able to solve for scjoe above but it doesn't seem to work for me.
However, 'Test Sound' in ControlCenter/SoundSystem/General plays OK!
So...is the problem with Firefox plugins, perhaps?
Could you tell me how to get the contents of /proc/asound/cards file that you mention above in the hope that you can help me.
Many thanks |

It might have to do with arts... Arts is a 'sound manager' that allows more than one sound to play at the same time... The problem is, it never since the time it was created, works worth a darn.. If you are using a program that uses sound, try typing artsdsp <program> where <program> is the name of the program you wish to run... Another thing you can try is installing alsa-oss and then typing aoss <program>. This passes the OSS calls through an emulator so Alsa can handle it. Most programs these days support alsa, but some do not, and this helps in those cases.
One or the other might work...
Hope this helps. _________________

i'd love to try out the suggestion made by david, regarding /dev/sound/dsp ... but how do i figure out the ## ?? Also, what does -a oss mean? I'd love to solve my USB speaker problem.
Thanks! |

| I don't know what -a oss means but it works. The # means a number you have to type after dps. Go to /dev/sound directory. The highest dsp (probably dps1) are the USB speakers. It worked for me. |

you are all great! they work now ... it's a miracle.
even though the highest number in my directory was dsp1, i did it with dsp plain old and simple and it worked for whatever reason.
thanks |
