Thanks to shengchieh for the link. This should help many to understand the 'move'.

The article should be read as a back grounder, with some good points and some stuff that does not necessarily apply, and maybe even some stuff that is wrong or inappropriate. Don't take it all seriously, and don't reject the positive information because the author is on a soapbox about some things. The article is about Linux and not about Xandros. Xandros does want to replace other OS's with an easy-to-use interface that makes new users comfortable and smooths the transition. That said, there is more or less learning for a new user, depending on their interests, prior knowledge, and their needs and habits. Welcome to everyone who is making the switch, and Welcome also to those thinking about it. We're a group of users, here to help.

One Xandros Forums member requested that this thread be removed, as he felt the article was hostile toward new users, and I certainly wouldn't argue that; I read the article myself and thought it was a rather poor thing to point a newbie to.

I also feel the frustration of explaining the same things to newbies over and over again, telling them how and why Linux is different than windoze, why we prefer the Linux way, and so on. But I realize that every time I have to make that explanation, somebody is likely converting to Linux, which is always a good thing.

I think it would be best if people not write stuff like that while they are upset or angry. Sit down, relax, have a beer/smoke a bowl/take a chill pill/whatever. Remember what it was like for you when you were a newbie. Then write the article. The same advice could of course be applied to posting here on the Forums.

I feel the frustration too, but I try not to let it show when I respond to questions. (I don't always succeed at this...)

In my opinion, about 80% of that article is flat, plain, useful information for new Linux users. It explain why things are the way they are.

It's just a shame that the last 20% of it degenerates into useless Linux snobbery.

While the mainstream Linux commuinity may not support folks like us, we seem to be doing a good job of supporting ourselves.

My feeling is there is a lot of good info in there just don't get put off by the BS portions. There *are* distros for win refugees.

I dunno. I thought the article was mostly helpful and worth a read. I guess I glossed over the 20% or whatever that is hostile. I didn't hear that someone wanted it removed. I suppose I could, or if someone wanted to add some info to the post, either a 'guide on how to read this' or some sort of 'disclaimer/advice in addition', I would accept that as fine. I could also move it to 'off topic'. I don't have an investment in this, except to be helpful, and if it isn't helpful, then I'll do what is best here. (I do think we need some sort of primer for moving over from other OS's, remembering my transition). Thanks.

arnoldjames, don't move it or re-move it. There was somebody that requested that, and as you can see, I didn't. I did suggest to that person that he write a better one, which I don't think would be very hard to do. Some will find the article helpful, some will not. You can't please 'em all. Smile
