(Sorry I forgot a subject line the first time)
Folks,
How do you make deb files work from the debian website.(www.debian.org)
I have download various deb files, and run them.
I also have a bunch of websites in my repository since these tools are unsupported by xandros networks.
Nothing seems to happen except xandros gives me errors.
Note, I have loaded deb files from elsewhere and gotten them to work example Kaudio, I just can't understand how to get them from the Debian website (which lists tons of software).
Thanks, I am new to linux, any help would be apprecitated.

The Debian site's DEBs are not ment to be downloaded seperately.
They usually have atleast 12 different dependencies (required packages), which also have to be downloaded. Those in turn, will have dependencies of their own.
You also have to pick the right version. Which in this case, is Stable. Xandros 3 is based on Sarge (Beta*), and Xandros 2 is based on Woody (Beta*). Xandros 4 may or may not be based on Sarge Stable (Final), or Sid Unstable (Beta)...
* I hope I have not confused you. "Beta" is a term used to describe the state a particular software program is in, when it is being written. Since Debian does not write the software, they chose a few other terms. testing, unstable, and stable.
Alpha/Testing = First Version. Expect lots of bugs. Not for public use.
Beta/Unstable = Second version. Software is believed to be ready, but is going through a few double-check procedures, to find, and fix any bugs, which are inevitable.
Final/Stable = Final Release Version. There are no plans for any bug fixes, or patches. Unless needed. This excludes Microsoft software.
The Debian site was designed to be browsed using an APT program, such as Synaptic, or Xandros Networks. Click on the "Edit" Menu in XN, and select "Set Application Sources".
Xandros Networks -> Edit -> Set Application Sources... -> Add
Unfortunately, most of the Debian sites software is incompatible with Xandros. It can cause instability, or completely wreck your install (break it). Since some require Debian's KDE, instead of Xandros' KDE, etc.
Before you go adding Debian to your repository lists, check out the "Pinning" tutorials.

Thanks guys, for the help.
I will try your suggestions soon.
Another question,
In Xandros networks>set application sources, what is the difference between debian unsupported site and custom path(s):
Thanks again,

When Xandros 3.0 was ready to release, Xandros took a "snapshot" of what was available in Debian at that time. That's what's in the Debian unsupported. Debian has since changed, added new, and so on, but the Xandros Debian unsupported is still what was in Debian at the time X3 was released. The custom paths you can put anything you want in there, including things that will totally trash your system, if that's what you want, and as several people have found out recently.

Perhaps typing "man:sources.list" in the address bar of XFM would help?
What did you type that you got 404 errors?
If the line has a "#" in the front, that means it is disabled. _________________ Thanks for all the fishes, Xandros. |

Could be that matty's site is down.
Have you tried to browse to http://www.xandros.or.id/archive ?
Works for me.
However, you probably need to reverse the order:
| Code: | | deb http://www.xandros.or.id/archive xxx main |
You could always just use the ArchLUG mirrors instead.
I know they work. _________________ Thanks for all the fishes, Xandros. |

deb http://www.xandros.or.id/archive main xxx
That is a web URL pointing towards the X.O.ID APT server, run by Matty, a moderator, and Xandros employee. APT is a server standard for Debian, Ubuntu, Mepis, Xandros, Knoppix, and any APT distro.
"main" is the main X.O.ID repository, containing Matty's packages.
"xxx" is the "experimental" repository. It contains some of the "Beta" software, that is being tested for use in the official release of Xandros. _________________ The answers are out there. You just have to know how to find them.

Does anyone have any repositories for Xandros 4?
Will the ones for Xandros 3 work?
Also, I'm having the worst luck with source packages... Can't create a deb or use make.. cuz my GCC keeps crashin through the make process... Does anyone happen to have or know where I can find a deb package for Kopete 0.12.0 or 0.12.1? If not, what about Gaim 1.5.0? I'm currently using Gaim 1.2.1 it's better than the version of Kopete that came with Xandros 4... |

That's just showing that you have duplicate entries in your sources list. I don't think matty has added kopete to his repository yet. I got kopete from debian repositories (see my post above for source list). _________________ X4 Premium, Arch 0.8 Voodoo
