Some of the components in Xandros 3 are around a year old and it could be another 4-5 months before we see Xandros 4, so lets experiment and see if Xandros 3 can be upgraded with more recent components.
To start off I'm looking at upgrading KDE to 3.4.3 or use the latest Gnome; I'm also looking at installing these into the users home folder as an alternative to replacing Xandros' base KDE 3.3.0 installation.
If anyone else has any ideas or already suceeded at upgrading components then feel free to mention these. _________________ Linux simply works for me...

I decided to install Garnome from ftp://cipherfunk.org/pub/tarballs/garnome/v2.12/garnome-2.12.1.tar.bz2
I'm using a fresh Xandros 3,0.2 OCE minimal installation as my testing ground. Make sure the Xandros Development packages are inststalled C/C++, Debian, KDE, & TCL/TK. Make sure Debian Unsupported DEB repository is enabled and it wouldn't hurt to install checkinstall for making DEB packages.
I created the following apt-get script to automatically fetch all the Garnome dependencies:
| garnomedep wrote: | #!/bin/sh
apt-get install bash wget gzip bzip2 binutils gcc g++ make bison flex gettext diff patch autoconf automake libtool fam libbz2-dev samba libpng-dev libjpeg-dev libtiff-dev libdb4.1-dev libkrb5-dev libldap-dev libgnutls-dev xlibs-dev xlibs-static-dev dbus-glib-1-dev libhal-dev libhal-storage-dev libflac-dev libid3tag0-dev libmad0-dev libmpeg2-4-dev libogg-dev libvorbis-dev libncurses5-dev libpopt-dev libgdbm-dev libbz2-dev zlib1g-dev libexpat1-dev libsmbclient-dev hermes1-dev docbook-xml docbook-xsl openjade libpcre3-dev libaspell-dev libkrb5-dev libapm-dev libcupsys2-dev libexif-dev liblcms1-dev libgpgme-dev libgnutls-dev libpisock-dev libreadline4-dev libsensors-dev libldap2-dev libopenh323-dev libpt-dev libsdl-dev libgcj-dev libgtkspell-dev python2.4-dev valgrind libxml-encoding-perl |
liblame-dev, libfaad2-dev, libvisual-dev, libvidcore4-dev are not included in the apt-get script; don't forget to make this script executable which can de done through XFM.
# ./garnomedep
then extract garnome-2.12.1.tar.bz2
# cd garnome/desktop
# make paranoid-install
If I forgot any dependencies aside from the 4 left out; please let me know.
I ran into a SDL dependency problem for gst-plugins part of Garnome; the control center seems to have a dependency problem as well. I'm going to looks at other alternatives, as Garnome doesn't seem to be what it's advertised to be. If anyone else want's to take a kick at Garnome, have fun because I'm not spending anymore time on it until these dependency errors get resolved. _________________ Linux simply works for me...

http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=5162

I got KDE 3.4.3 /kde/kdebase to nicely install under username konstruct; then it was just a matter of modifying .xsession & .bash_profiles; I also symbolicly linked /home/konstruct/kde3.4.3/share/icons to /usr/share/icons so that the Xandros 3 icons would be used as the default KDE set. I already had a some libraries already loaded in, so I'm not sure about which dependencies are required.
It seems that the applications/components compiled under KDE 3.4.3 run under the /home/users directory it was installed on; however, I'm not sure if the Xandros 3 KDE 3.3.0 applications/components like XFM/XN run from the / directories; I know components like XFM/XN run fine under KDE 3.4.3. If control centre needs to be run under KDE 3.4.3 use /usr/bin/kcontrol instead as it's linked to Xandros 3 applications. If you plan on editing the KDE 3.4.3 menu use /usr/bin/kmenuedit instead the KDE 3.4.3 version.
KDE 3.4.3 base install takes 189 MB in the /home user's folder and compresses to 70 MB as a tgz. With a few mods and tweaks KDE 3.4.3 (konstruct into a /home/users folder) seems to be a viable desktop upgrade option for Xandros 3; it even runs faster than Xandros 3's KDE 3.3.0. _________________ Linux simply works for me...

I'm reopening this old topic,
What would happen if I set set Konstruct's prefix to /usr/?
Xandros 3.3.0's menu and files association are full of bugs.
And It's a Linux distrib, not Windows, I should be able to update or install any deskop environement.
Xandros is as closed as Windows. It's sad 'cause hardware compatibility and Xandros apps and look are very good.
So, still no ways to update KDE or install another DE? |

Nope; maybe when Xandros 4 is released you could simply change the Xandros 3 sources to Xandros 4 sources then reboot into commmand prompt via Expert mode and do a apt-get dist-upgrade, but it would just be easier, safer, & more stable to install Xandros 4 from CD.
KDE is not one of those GUI desktops that can be easily upgraded, but the newer version can be installed beside the older version like done in this thread.

This thread basicly installs a newer version of KDE beside Xandros 3's KDE 3.3.0 _________________ Linux simply works for me...
