Hi,

I ran across Linux From Scratch at Distrowatch.

Would it be a "good" way to introduce oneself to "linux"?

Timewise? Efficiency wise? Usefullness wise? Anyotherwise?

ain't XANDROS great!

Just so you're aware, another building linux from scratch is

Never built from scratch, so no comment there.

That's on my "todo" list, though as I understand it, it is *very* time consuming Wink
I really cannot think of a more in depth way of learning Linux, though.

You might think about a Gentoo install, as well. Not quite the same thing as an LFS install, but pretty in depth, and the neat thing is you can do an install from Xandros (on an empty partition) by chrooting in to the Gentoo environment.
You have not lived until you have had something take 20 hours to compile Wink.

The great thing about LFS and a Gentoo stage 1 install is that everything is completely optimized for your computer, and the performance should be the best.

An aside- I learned while posting this that a small cat walking on the keyboard can, indeed, crash Firefox Wink.

Linux from Scratch is useful as an educational approach to learning the internals of a Linux system. After building it, you'll know what each component does. It is set up as a set of instructions--a "How to" manual for each part, so it is easy for a beginner to follow.

if you are talking about making a linux OS then i know what you mean im building a linux OS out of the scripting code called ruby! its hard as heck!,or if you mean learning linux like installing crap and understanding the files system is not the easiest learning from scratch, but when you learn the basics on how it
works,go tohowstuffworks.com i swear thats where i started my basics on that,..

Hi,
I hadn't noticed your posts before, but since I'm oldern' dirt that might indicate why.

Let me welcome you to the friendliest forum on the net!

What I would "like" to do is make "something" that would be a "grading' and seating chart' and "absence" package that could be put into "maybe" xandros as a teacher thing....

and thought it might be a way to learn linux rather than just reading a book and waiting for something to happen to xandros.....which never happens! Laughing

anyway, thanks for the post!

ain't xandros great!

Great idea Wood Smoke! I have been learning from books, trial and error, man and help pages, forums, and pestering the Unix guys at work!

Good book for general knowledge is the "Linux for Dummies". Actually has a lot of good info. Tells what the different files in the file eystem are for, in general.

I would not recommend attempting to install Gentoo. It is more than a challenge, more like a root canel gone bad. Takes days to install, yes days to get to the desktop.

I posted some of my own personal experiences with installing the different distros on my laptop at http://home.cinci.rr.com/fuelinjected. Current web home till I can get a better one, or my own web server up and going.

Xandros rocks!
Cool
