I'm always afraid to hear something like this, but I know it's progress, and it sounds good for obvious compatability things. not to mention conjoining forces have more power and more power generally means you'll be around longer.
interesting article though.

Why? I don't see anything wrong with this. I actually think it great improvement, atleast potentially.

Well, it's been my experiance that with alot of things, consortiums, or conglomerating efforts that make it are often the first step to sticking it to the end user in one way or another. Maybe I'm jaded, but it seems this is what often happens: 1)people work hard together to make something 'better'
2)that something actually gets alot better thus eliminating compition.
3)now whatever is better gets a attitude and thoughts of godhood
4)with godhood often comes the feeling of "well, I'm what you want, since you want me more than I want you, you, can piss off and I could care less.

ironic that some of the things that prevents *nix from taking over the world because of its greatness may also be what makes it great, but this is how I see things, and I am totally in support of this happening, but I live in a monopolistic society, and I know when people can be greedy they often choose to be.

Anything in Debian is guaranteed to be freely available. Debian is as free as a linux distro can be. Debian can't really take advantage of the public. If Xandros was partnering with Mandrivacoris then I might share your concern since that would be profit oriented companies getting together... but Debian is a group of free contributors.

How long will it take until the Debian Gnu/Linux kernel "Etch" will be integrated in the next version of Xandros?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have to tell you that I am so happy with my Xandros Desktop OS Version 3 Business Edition that I put up a website to tribute the OS. I want to be a retailer, but I still haven't found another real enthusiast in Sweden....yet, to organize the business with or a person that understands the value of a commercial Linux distro.

For X4, never. For later releases, at least not until it reaches the "stable" stage. Until then Xandros will proceed to base their distro on current stable and backport individual packages from Etch (such as KDE).

Xandros main goal is to remain LSB compliant with or without Etch.

I think I begin to understand. According to this article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Standard_Base Debian is LSB-compatible, but not LSB-compliant. In Xandros Networks you can install DEB-files and RPM-files. Does it mean that Xandros distro is developed beyond the Debian Sarge?
What about the DCC Alliance then?
http://www.dccalliance.org/
They want "to assemble a common, standards-based core for Debian-based Linux distributions and accelerate worldwide commercial adoption of Debian GNU/Linux."

Is there a possible way to contact you Arne Anka to talk in swedish?

Nah. I would not say that. LSB complient or not, the installation base for Debian is much larger than the one of Xandros (there are much more DEB s for Debian than for Xandros). At least that's how it is at present time.

Sooner or later I think all distros (Debian included) need to develop a common core (such as LSB) or Linux as a whole will face difficulties to grow.

The Linux® Standards Base (LSB) is a set of standards for compatibility among Linux distributions. Xandros, being based on Debian® GNU/Linux, is compatible with it, but is not yet fully LSB compliant. Xandros and Debian are moving towards LSB compliance. We are mostly compatible with the LSB specification but have not yet passed all official conformance tests.

This is a really interesting conversation between Magnus Blomfelt, Matt Zimmerman and Mark Shuttleworth:

An overview of the issue above:

Maybe Xandros should aiming at search engine manipulation like Ubuntu members:

"On Sun, 8 Jan 2006, Corey Burger wrote:

Is this what is termed search engine manipulation? If you're going to do,
at least don't talk about it. One of Ubuntu's pleasing features is that
marketing has been subtle and not overt.
