|

I've installed Firefox from the update manager. Firefox installed fine, but lacks integration.
1) I can't seem to set it as the default browser.
2) In the downloads dialog, open and remove links don't work
3) The initial download location, "desktop" somehow points to my home directory... not my desktop.
Xandros, can you update the "Xandros Networks" package to include fixes? |

Do following things:
1. In root console run "update-alternatives --config x-www-browser" and select your browser. This is the Debian way to selectin a default browser. Unfortenately not all apps. make use of it (Acrobat 7.0 for instance need to be configured separately).
2. Change XFM file type association for HTML, possibly to use x-www-browser instead of mozilla-firefox in case you want to change default browser again in the future (then point 2 will be unnecessary).
3 If you use Thunderbird as mail client, follow the instructions in http://support.xandros.com/kb-view.php?topic=77 to be able to start it from Firefox mailto links.

Remove always work for me (hope we talk about same thing). Open however will not work if Firefox can't find any app. to run to open the downloaded file. I found the problem was that /etc/mailcap was not updated with mime types I needed (mozplugger and kaffeine mozilla plugin will no do in some cases).
In my case what I did was to add proper video mime types in /usr/lib/mime/packages/xine-ui and from a root concole run "update-mime" and voala everything worked well. Now even Thunderbird seem to be able to run WMV files just by a click.

This may be more a Firefox problem than Xandros. Have you asked the question at Mozilla forum (www.mozilla.org) ?

1.
If you still have trouble w/ Arne's approach, go to control center
-> file assoc.. and change the file association for *.html.
3.
Edit
-> Preferences
-> Download
Click your preference on the top two lines.
(ask ... OR save ... + directory)

I think changing file association from XFM and Control Center has same effect. Have not verified that yet. |

1) "I can't seem to set it as the default browser."
From root console, executed "update-alternatives --config x-www-browser". Selected Firefox. Worked great.
2) "In the downloads dialog, open and remove links don't work"
"Remove" does in fact work. However, "open" needs help. It can be made to work, but I'm not sure I want to go slicing and dicing MIME types and files.
3) "The initial download location, "desktop" somehow points to my home directory... not my desktop."
This is indeed a FireFox / Mozilla Linux issue. Can be changed, though.
I do appreciate all of the advise.
Xandros has made such amazing strides in terms of top-down integration, I rather not see frayed ends at this point. Firefox is perhaps the most well known open source product and I'd like an option to fully integrate it into my Xandros desktop by mouse click... not by dropping to a command prompt and being a system admin. |

I know what you mean. But it is realy a simple procedure. If you tell me what type of files won't open (perhaps you have a link) may be I can give you more exact details what you need to do.
To begin with, do you have mozplugger installed. That may help you in most cases. |

I successfully changed mine using the technique given below.
This was on Firefox. In Mozilla, it's alittle different, but I know
I did it. Investigating...

On Mozilla, left-click help. Search for "download".
The options are discussed there. I didn't read it
all the way, but I know you can do it because I
did it. If you still stumped after reading, let me know.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but that doesn't seem to want to work for me. Like, it shows up as default but programs like Kopete still call on Mozilla.
| Code: | There are 3 alternatives which provide `x-www-browser'.
Selection Alternative
-----------------------------------------------
1 /usr/bin/konqueror
*+ 2 /usr/bin/mozilla
3 /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox
Press enter to keep the default[*], or type selection number: 3
Using `/usr/bin/mozilla-firefox' to provide `x-www-browser'.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
And a double check to make sure it shows up as default:
There are 3 alternatives which provide `x-www-browser'.

1 /usr/bin/konqueror
+ 2 /usr/bin/mozilla
* 3 /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox

Not all apps make use of Debian way to use a default browser.
Have you set up file association as well in Control Center ?
Also, if you don't need mozilla, uninstall it or at least exec
update-alternatives --config mozilla |

I followed the suggestion to run "update-alternatives", below is the result.
Selection Alternative
-----------------------------------------------
1 /usr/bin/konqueror
+ 2 /usr/bin/mozilla
* 3 /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox
Unfortunately when I click on a url from within Thunderbird now, no browser starts. If I update-alternatives and switch back to mozilla, it works fine. I have no trouble running Firefox normally.
Hmmmmmmmmmm.
PS What's the + in front of mozilla? |

OK, Now this is getting really ugly! I tried your suggestion installing a Firefox update for 1.04 from XN. For the record I had NOT compiled a version of Firefox. I had downloaded it from the mozilla.org site and followed the directions I saw on XN. Everything worked fine with the exception of sites which had a "mailto". ...and when in Thunderbird it wanted to pulkl up Mozilla when I clickecd on a URL in an e-mail.
When running the update there were 2 errors about Invalid UTF-8 - I shoulda saved them but didn't. Looked like it was during clean-up(?)
Tried Thunderpird and still nothing when trying to click a link to start Firefox. Started Firefox and tried to click a mailto and same problem as before....it doesn't open anything.
So while still in XN I saw there was also an update for NVu.... Since I had never used it I thought I would remove it and then add it completely Got the following while removing nVu using Xandros Network
[Invalid UTF-8] Could not parse file '/usr/share/applications/kde/konnectvpn.desktop': desktop entry contain line 'Name[fr]=Connection a un r\xe9seau priv\xe9s virtuel' which is not UTF-8
[Invalid UTF-8] Could not parse file '/usr/share/applications/kde/eventview.desktop': desktop entry contain line 'Name[fr]=Visualiseur d'\xe9v\xe9nements' which is not UTF-8

[Invalid UTF-8] Could not parse file '/usr/share/applications/ooo645calc.desktop': desktop entry contain line 'Comment[ca]=Fulla de c\xc3| lcul d'OpenOffice.org' which is not UTF-8
Xandros Networks has detected the following error:

reinstall it before attempting configuration.

Xandros Networks detected errors while processing the following file(s):
/var/cache/apt/archives/mozilla-firefox_1.x.1.0.4-2_i386.deb

Do I have a more serious issue here? |

It may be somewhat harder than that, although I'd try impetigo's suggestion first as it's a lot easier and may work for you.
Several of us have had this problem, I started a thread about it yesterday and worked out a fix for my system last night which I will post when I'm up to date with the forum messages (give me about an hour).
Since it's a discuss thing rather than a one step solution the thread is here
