Hey guys, my Linspire review just went live today at OSNews. Now don't feel betrayed by my review since Xandros is a very good OS that I use about 50% of the time at work. I have been a long time Linux User, but Linspire so far has meet my needs the most and it's just right for me and my Family at Home. I will also be writing what I'm sure will be a very positive review about Xandros 3 BE once released. Always remember, it's not about my Distro is better than yours, it's about Linux becoming a success! I want choice and this is what Linux provides. Smile

linspire is fairly good, there are better....

linspire offers upgrade with special keep applications infact option like a windows upgrade.. this feature is a goldmine! as you can reset a system crash aswell as reset a system break with this feature reverting to defaults but keeping all your applications intact.

asfar as CNR,

I don't like the PAY money for CNR I think that to PAY for los-kernel-source-2.6.10 should be illegal because kernel sources should be available for free regardless according to GPL. However you do get a free trial to CNR for 15 days which is more then enough time to download 1/2 of their repository hehe.

Support for Linspire exceeds Xandros a few thousand percent aswell linspire is a more polished product. Xandros would be smart to lean from this product which is creating linspire pc's and branding with walmart.

Genius marketing stategies.

Linspire I will admit is too graphical for my liking I didnt pirticularly like eldorado's style I think its processor intensive on a slower

It offers the Reiser 4 File system which is very fast.

With all this being said I have tried and used linspire and its great but for my personal needs I have stuck to a 2.6.11 kernel.

As for linspire problems off the bat ..

Linspire doesnt have all the latest apps even in their premium services but they do have very neat organization in their CNR it really shows you whats avilable for linux saves .. hours searching for a specific app.. I wanted text to speech which is btw also avilable under xandros ( unsupported using festival) the version xandros had was from 1999 and very outdated the linspire version was 2003. Seems like linspire does a great job making sure their repositories are recent.

Festival, allows you to have your computer forexample read your webpage for you and other text to speech compatibilities .. speaking clock and so on.

I got my wireless USB working on linspire as it offers native drivers built into its core so you dont have to go looking for drivers.. I couldnt get some of my devices working. I expected better USB compatibility.

the newer 2.6.11 kernels and distributions that use it have better hardware support for usb.

***Judyz's note: The rest of this post was not fit for this forum. This poster has moved on to using another distro. He has decided to return today in what would appear to be an attempt to stir up problems perhaps in hopes of pressuring Xandros for a refund. In reality he is being a nuisance for our users and not Xandros. I have taken the unusual step of editing out the derogatory comments and such in this post to put an end to this. The facts part of his post has been left for our users to judge for themselves. The words are his own.

IF I MAY.......

I bought a CNR Membership a few months back. I recently downloaded 5.0 just to take it for a spin.

Issues-

Can it possibly look any more like XP? The Launcher (Start button) looks exactly like the one in XP...YUCK

800 Mhz cpu minimum? Years ago Linux was the OS for less powerful machines. Guess Lin forgot that. Rolling Eyes

Not that many apps in CNR. With 4.5 there were more choices, though many weren't compatible (or woldn't properly download)

Good points -

LSongs and LPhoto are cool ....though they look a whole lot like stuff from MS.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think sometimes we (Linux users) forget that while the aim may be to make an OS that is easy to use and easy to migrate to (from MS) there is no need to create something that might look like it was created in Redmond. Mac users love there machines and OS, but that doesn't mean it looks like a Windows clone. Easy to use is one thing, but as someone who teaches PC Novices to use a computer, I feel that the average PC user can handle things even if (maybe especially if) Linux does have a seperate and unique look to it.

IMHO it's not the paint job that matters, it's what's under the hood that sells the product.

I still have my CNR membership.
Linspire has a TON of eye candy and the CNR makes it easy for newbies (which is their goal). But, they went a little over board and the desktop is sluggish. I was VERY impressed when Linspire found my 11g wifi I was on the network fast, but the apps are slow if you don't have enough ram and processor speed to handle all the eye candy.

Xandros is snappy on my older machines. I had to use Ndiswrapper to install windows drivers for my 11g wireless PCMCIA card, but the speed is worth it.

Been there, downloaded that.... sorry the guy's are right; Linspire is way too Microsoft Window XP-ish for me, it is amazing what Xandros does to you. It makes you comfortable, gives you multiple levels of control and enjoyment. Cool Just little uncomfortable with the CNR system. I can't put my finger on it but then I haven't used it long enough.

I just want to add, being a Linspire user, I downloaded Xandros OCE 3.01. I was so impressed with Xandros I just recently purchased Xandros 3.02 desktop. I think Xandros is much more polished than Linspire. I had a problem with the sound not working in Xandros, but it was an easy fix. In Linspire, any fix isn't as easy. I think Xandros is cleaner, runs faster and is better structured than Linpire.
The saving grace Linspire has is the CNR service. But the Xandros Network is almost as easy. Plus if you apt-get any updates in Linspire, it will hose you system.
I had a heck of a time getting the ATI video driver to work in Linspire, Xandros installed the driver right away.
Xandros is much more geared to the Windows user too. And there forums seem to be more Windows friendly.
Windows complains if I access my NTFS partitions in Linpire, but it doesn't complain if I access them in Xandros.
Xandros detected my DHCP and Linspire didn't.
Plus other quirks that make Xandros come out on top.
I think Xandros is the bomb as far as Linux distros go

Nice review Rog. Welcome to Xandros. This is a very friendly and helpful bunch. Make yourself at home and feel free to ask questions.

YES, That is IT in one Rog!!! Polished, Linspire is very pretty for a windows clone but it is not polished or refined enough for me... I am hooked on Xandros. Cool

I'm with you....this is an old post...and I laughed when the person said that Xandros could learn something from Linspire.
What?
Run the system as root? Hehehehehehehe
If you must know....Linspire got started with Xandros code.
So Linspire is derived from Xandros and heavily modified.
I have used both...and Xandros is just the better product to me, altho both distros fill their customers needs nicely.
Linspire is for total computer idiots who might never learn how to do anything in Linux. It holds your hand...and pretty much does the work for you.
Xandros is a little more advanced....but its still easy for most computer savy types to learn....and is also a decent distro for advanced power users.
Just my two cents.

Still mis-guided. You do not have to run as root. You are asked the first time the system runs if you wish to set up a user. You are not forced to run as root except that first time.

You are 100 percent correct in that.

That is exactly what linspire is going for. If they can get those people to use linux then what is the problem with that???

Yes computer savy types. As mentioned above, linspire is for the "not so savy" people.

I do not see anything wrong with people using linspire or any other linux distribution for that matter. Heck if they are happy with windows and all the work that goes with it, then so be it.

The nice thing about so many different distributions is that there is bound to be one or two that fit someones needs to a "T". Choice is a good thing!!!

So all the eye candy is why I couldn't get Linspire to run on my old donated machines! I learn something new every day.....kind of like waking up in a new world every day.... uhhh what day is it?

But now I know why it wouldn't run....it seemed to want to... just wouldn't

ain't xandros great!

WHAT is wrong with that? Under the guise of 'serving' people....they are milking them dry. Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day...teach him to fish...and you feed him for a lifetime.
Some folks are capable of learning linux, and doing things for themselves. I disagree with paying for freeware to be installed on my computer. Xandros and Linspire are both based upon Debian, which will be forever free....which distro do you see being more faithful to Debian's legacy? Xandros only charges for proprietary software....
