First: Do not Reply directly to the Guide Sticky. Make a new topic and reply The less clutter in this the Better.
This is a simple guide to tweak the look of your desktop. I will go in sections and allow a pretty detailed guide to move you through making your desktop look simply magnificent. I will post other themes under the first theme.
Any suggestions post them as new topic and I will edit this sticky to incorporate your idea. Full credit will be given to your idea and theme.
Desktop #1 Mac it look like Mak
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=21404
First:
let us start by getting the Cool Backgrounds of Tux'n'Tosh: Go here and go to the wallpapers tab. Download the cool looking ones. Save to a newly created folder in your My Document directory called Themes. You can create the folder while saving by looking for the new folder icon in the save window at the top right side. You should even create another folder inside of Themes called Tux'N'Tosh.
http://www.sadeem.net/tux.html
When you have gathered your wallpapers go to Control Center and Display, then to Background. In the selection for picture hit the folder icon folder to the right of the address. Browse back to your /home/name/My Documents/Themes and Tux'n'Tosh if you added the second folder. Select your picture. If you want to see the picture simply right click your mouse in the white area and scroll to view and Thumbnail Preview. Now select your pic and click ok. Then Apply when back in the Conrol Center.
Second: The World of Baghira
Download the .debs for baghira here. http://xandros.or.id/downloads/ or add this address to your XN source list under edit in XN.
deb http://www.xandros.or.id/archive xxx main
Now you can download these debs from jetta by asking him to email them to you. http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=13183. You should get both kwin-style-baghira_0.5-2_i386.deb and kwin-decor-baghira_0.4.6_i386.deb . Install them by double clicking on them or installing via XN by typing baghira. Don't have your unofficial site checked in your XN source list when installing.
Making the bagira mac look for style. In Control center go to style. Go to the first widget style pulldown window and move to the top looking for baghira. You can use it by default and see if it is what you like, or continue reading. Go to the configure button beside the widget style. Under the general design tab make sure defualt style is brushed metal. Reduced the stipple contrast to its lowest setting. Shadow group boxes to its highest. The botton color is changed by moving R to 114 G to 165 and B to 201. Select use Rectangular Buttion. Leave everything else as default. Then go to the Special Widgets tab. Check the draw tree lines and on the right of the pull down window for lines click on the color box and choose a light aqua blue. Check on the use custom expander color and again use acqua color but slightly lighter and more green. Under Progres bar make sure to check show value. Leave all else as default. Go to menus tab and change the translucent to 3/4 toward solid. Under look section check the backgournd color buttion (leave text as black) and use your lighter acqua color. You can choose effect and fade in if you have a fast computer. I leave it alone. Now move to your Custom Colors tab. Select Scrollbar slider and choose your dark acqua color. Pressed slider should be the lighter aqua color and the hovered slider should be between the dark and light aqua. you active tab can use similar light aqua or even lighter. Don't tint yoru brushed metal until you see the style complete. You may not like the effect of tint. Hit the OK button and you are almost finished. in the Style screen there are three tabs atop, Style Effects Miscellaneous. If you select Effects you can manipulate the Gui effects. Do this at the risk of slowing your system.
Now move to the Window decoration in Display. Under Common Settings section clic on Follow style and use big bottom bar. Default mode is Jaguar. In the right section with the three styles jag/pan/brused, select the jaguar tab. Button stye is Jaguar, Active titlebar effect is brushed and inactive is brushed as well. Now you can change this to glossy or gradient. but that is later when you are comfortable with your effect. Round all corners. Now co to the Configure button Colors at the top left section. Select the first botton on top. These are the three settings. 60/158/241 Button 2. 104/155/223 Button 3 197/241/192 Button 4102/165/192. Click on Ok and apply.
Third:
Icons. Go here and download. Place in your theme folder http://personal.telefonica.terra.es/web/ivanciko/crystalsvg.tar.bz2
Now in Control Center go to icons and Install new theme. Browse to your newly downloaded icon set and select. Click on the new theme. It will come up Crystal SVG Icon Theme by Everaldo.com Design Studio.
Fourth: The World of Kxdocker
kxdocker. Again go to Matty's site where you got the baghira themes and look in the goodies folder. Or use XN and the set applications source already given above. Install or download and intall kxdocker and its resources. You WILL have to get the kxdocker_conf.xml file as well. Remember to download it. You can't install this via XN. So go to the site and get your account. I will be posting a Specialized Xandros xml file this weekend. But for now that is all you need. If your install went well then you can go to Launch, applications, Utilities and kxdocker. Select and it will run. It will ask for a file to open up. Go to the xml file you remembered to download and select it. You can play around with it by right clicking on docker or the panel icon and configure. remember if you do horse around with the xml file save it as another name. remember to keep the .xml extention on it.
Fifth:
Brushed metal panel. I have a file started with different panel images and will put them on Matty's site this weekend. To install simply right click on the panel, configure panel, and go to the appearance tab. Look for the Panel Background section and enable the image. Go to the browse folder and select one of the files you will have here soon. Then apply.
Enjoy

Theme #2
This theme is based on a simple and elegant look which can be used in many homes.
The pakage at xandros.or.id will not be up for a day or so. Andrew is putting it together.
First things first.
Go to http://xandros.or.id/downloads and you will notice in Graphics and Xandros Themes and crystalizednoia a few packages you should download for this theme. Get them all. Including these packages. baghira style, kxdocker and karamba. Install every deb package you download.
1. Transforming Kicker aka Panel
right click on your Panel and configure panel place its location on top of the screen. Custom size to 40 pixels. leave Hiding and Menu as default. Enable icon zooming and Enable Transparency. Apply. Now move to the log in and out section on the panel and right click and select transparent. Note that the taskbar isn't transparent. Here is where Taskbar2 is needed. Go to the xandros.or.id and get the mtaskbar deb. Install it. Now right click on the panel and add applet taskbar v.2. Then right click and remove applet taskbar.
What about the cool pager on the right side? Go to the pager windows on panel and right click and configure virtual desktops. Create as many as you would like. I recommend you create as many as your machine will be able to handle. The more pagers the harder it is on the system. I recommend 4 or less. Now right click on the pager windows in panel and launch the pager. A group of compressed windows with a window frame will appear. Right click on the set and configure kpager. Select Show number, Show background, Show windows. Select Pixmap and Vertical layout. Ok.
Now use your mouse and right click on your window frame and drag to increase the size and or reduce the size. Make them about an inch and a quarter by an inch and a quater. Then drag the whole window panel to the upper right side just below the time. Right click on the window frame itself and Advanced. You can keep below others or atop, I think it is better to be below. Now select advanced and no border. This should permently affix it to that location. If something goes wrong with placement then right click and quit. You don't need to have two pagers up and running so goto the panel and right click remove applet pager. Remember if you ned to get it called up just add it back on with the panel. Finally getting the transparent launch. As administrator in XFM go to the folder you downloaded the theme components you got from xo.id and copy the 18850xandros3 tgz and go to /usr/share/apps/kicker and rename the pixmaps to pixmaps1. Now create a folder called pixmaps and paste the tgz and extract its contents into the folder. Now leave the file manager and right click on the panel and go to size and customize change o 41, the new lanch button will appear. Wow that seems like alot. Now go to the extra quck lauch icons and right click remove. YOur done with panel.
Background. You now have the packgrounds needed to make this theme so goto control center and display background browse to the background select and do the same for all desktops.
Go back to the folder you downloaded all your theme packages and select the crystal 0.9.2.deb and install it by clicking it and let XN install. Now go to control center display, window decoration. Select Crystal. Now here are the settings.
In general settings select all round corners. Use shadowed text, and 10 for boarder width. Titlebar height 30. Tint buttons to a light blue white. Allow hover effect. Background Active window select intensity and outline with a light blue color. For Inactive select brighten and outline with a little darker color. Apply.
Icons:
Go here: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=3883
Download the tgz. Don't extract. But in Control center Display, Icons Install new Theme. Browse to the folder you placed the noia icon theme and select it. Install and select it. Many of your icons will change but to get them all you will have to log out and then back in. Don't do it yet, wait until we are finished.
Style:
Baghira: Select baghira and configure. Here are the settings:
General Design: Stipple Lowest setting Shadow intensity hightest. Button color R=100 G=136 B=209 Widget coloring Aquarious
Special Widgets: Draw tree lines check and select a royal blue for the color . Use custom expander color and same royal blue. Leave Kicker with defaults. Go to Scrollbars check all three. Now progress bar Apple and show value check.
Menus: Translucency Middle setting. Under Look: Unselect Stipples and select text shadows. Background color is light blue. Effect=None. Use Drop shadows and give it a value of Size 15. Intensity=Dark, highest setting.
custom Colors: Check use Custom. Scrollbar royal blue and darker royal blue for Pressed Slider. Inactive tab a light blue and for active tab a darker blue. Slider Groove is lightest blue. Hovered slider=royal blue your preference.
Now Ok.
And Apply.
Last things are Kxdocker. You will find it in your Launch Applications Utilities. load it and if you already have a theme loaded in it right click on it and configure then choose the second icon on the menu bar which wil allow you to load a new theme. Browse to the new crystalizednoia.xml you downloaded from xandros.or.id.
SuperKaramba: First extract all three widgets you downloaded from xandros.or.id. The tgz are crystal-liquid both calendar and weather and fantastic. Now under Launch, Applicaitons, Utilities, Superkaramba open. then open theme and browse to the extracted folders and enter each one and look for the theme file. Move Fantastic above the bar on the left side and then calendar below the whte bar followed by the weather. Note that weather will require you configure the location via zip. Configure Backgrounds and browse to the crystalblue.
You are finished.
I hope you like.
P.S. As you see this is a great way to get themes set up. Test your themes and add them with as much detail as possible. Add an image of your theme by uploading them to some site, I use kdelook.org. and then right click on the picture and copy image location, Then on xandros forum an under the sticky your theme post type NO spaces.
Take time to make your theme. And test it well. Use theme components that are known to work in Xandros. _________________ This is My Linux Box, GET YOUR OWN!

Cool. I think it would be better to ask a moderator to look into whether it should be a sticky. They may not be allowed to "sticky" a thread, even though they can do it.
Some people might like to have the Brushed theme for Firefox. Its identical to Saferfox Xpanded, in layout. Its available from the Mozilla Extensions Mirror forums. http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=2656 _________________ The answers are out there. You just have to know how to find them.

Now this is truly cool eye-candy; settings like these should be readily downloadable off XN to attract even more M$ Windows users. _________________ Linux simply works for me...

|
|
Strawnman,
I like your very intriguing design ideas, and I'm going to try some of them or something like them.
But the thought of doing so reminds me of a problem that has slightly annoyed me with Xandros: When I make a change, e.g., when I create a new shortcut, I like to place it in this or that particular spot on the KDE desktop. However, all too often, the next time I log in, the new icon appears somewhere else on the desktop.
How can I make my personal rearrangements of the desktop persist through successive logins? |

i have also seen that we the 3 icons i run...
well, the big LINUX people never need icons
i guess this is why on Xandros there's not auto arrange of ICONS like on XP
what i do instead of having all those icons is RUN stuff from the RUM command ... oops RUN.
saves me time , and desktop looks clean ..
most older LINUX users will critize your icons ..
but it's a matter of taste.. i'm s ure XANDROS will do those little touch-ups in the near future for XP graphical user. |

search this forum for grid lining your icons. There was some lenthy discussions but I don't remember if anyone was able to arrange them correctly. I prefer not having icons on the desktop unless they are aready your default ones. Icon clutter is useful but not attractive. Moreover, after a while you get used to having the programs in the Launch menu. In fact you can make a whole new category which has only those programs you would normally contain on your desktop. Look at tweaking your Launch menu to accomodate your needs.

|
|
This is a followup to my post of May21, in which I complained about Xandros's not keeping, through a re-boot, some changes I'd made in the placement of icons on my KDE desktop.
Today I installed SP2 to Xandros 3.0, as well as all other available updates. Among other benefits, the updating has cured the non-persistence problem.
Thanks, Xandros programmers! |
