Hello to all my Xandros comrades in linux land...
I've noted that request for a Xandros style package manager (requested in several places on this forum)
would be nice for the next Xandros Distro.
I used to use Storm-Linux a few years back, and when the Storm Package Manager was created by the Storm Gurus, Debian users starting using it all over the world.
It's greatest advantage was a "Find" search engine. Anyway, the
Xandros Gurus might consider using the Storm Package Manager as
a basis for its script workings for a special Xandros Package Manager.
I sure the Gurus at Xandros could hack and tweak it into the finely
tuned piece of artwork they have created thus far.
Either this, or make instructions on how to apt-get it directly into the Xandros box with programs that would easily install it as is.
(the package name is stormpkg by the way for those who would like to slip it into their Xandros system.)
Yes, I know about synaptic and gsynaptic but they did not have the search engine find option. I've heard that a version has come out from Libranet that does now.
Still and all, one can only appreciate the changes that Debian Distros underwent when other Debian Distros saw what Storm-Linux was trying to do. What Xandros has done in terms of an easily installable Debian Distro and more. Xandros is where, I imagine, Storm-Linux would of been if Storm-Linux hadn't gone out of business.
I compiled my first kernel with Storm-Linux, so I do use it still on occasion with one of my hard drives. (See how sentimental I can be, mates?)
I look forward to seeing the work that the Xandros Gurus are to be coming up with next. I find Xandros a very exciting project and enjoy it ver much.
But a Xandros package manager like the Storm Package Manager would be totally bleeding edge, don't you know... |

A proprietary front-end for DEB packages, that's what it is. The poster is referring to a truly universal package system that will work with ANY distro, not just Xandros. _________________ AMD64 3200+::1GB PC3200 RAM::120GB SATA::128MB Geforce 6800::16X DL DVDRW

Have a look at autopackage.
There they appear to 'trim' the dependencies so that only those with a higher number and additional features are called for.
If you try andd take gimp2 from debian you will find a lot of dependency queries. If you take it from autopackage it loads up with no problems but it is outwith the apt system.
A similar effort by Xandros to ameliorate the demand for every dependency quoted would be a help for everybody.
Autopackage aims to be non distribution dependent this must surely be the way to go.
