Ok, I created three users. For each of them I have dragged desktop icons around the way I want them, but only one of the three saves the icons where I placed them when I log out. I am sure there is a setting somewhere I found while looking around, but can't find it again.
Anyone know?

| When you log out of a user, the logout dialog box has a place where you can click "Save session for future logins." Check that box, then logout. The next time you log in, your settings should be the way you left them. |

Heh-heh... the "Save session for future logins." is the obvious answer, but this does not work for this user.
There is another setting in Control Center -> General Settings -> Desktop which is "Align icons vertically on desktop". This is checked by default, and if unchecked, the icons are arrange horizontally on the desktop. Even then when I move things around and then "Save session..." the desktop is still not saved. There must be something else overriding. |

Found it...
Root had grabbed the hidden .directory file in the Desktop folder and the user account could not write to it. So now the "Save session for future logins" does what I need... |
