Just a note: in my infinite cycle of installations as different problems slap me down, i can now be certain that a wierd instability in my clock that i had observed in the week of my first install (and wrestling with crossover+office over and over) has been replicated in a controlled setting.
It appears that the clock shifts back so it reports eight hours earlier when Office 2000 Professional is given a stock/default install. The situation was not so controlled that i can say exactly when the problem occurred (immediately after installation? after a reboot for an unrelated issue?) But the link seems pretty clear, if not guaranteed.
Note that hwclock & date both report the same time, same timezone .
