I have been a long time Ubuntu user ever since I started working at my current job about 5 years ago. Although I HATED the Gnome interface, I finally got used to it, and I was really impressed at just how well the interface worked with adding devices, etc. That and after awhile, I was actually getting the same good feeling I got with Red hat before the whole Fedora split stopped me dead in my tracks and I fled to Xandros.
I tended to prefer the LTS version of Ubuntu, largely because as a Xandros user, I preferred a solid release more than something that was constantly a work in progress.
With the eventual phasing out of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS I am dreading going to a unity interface on my laptops and servers. Unity is not the way to go in my opinion, but I kind of wanted to think of other user's opinion's on the subject.. Am I completely wrong on this?
If not, what are current distros that you think will be the next Red Hat / Ubuntu.
Thanks guys, and good to see some of you still on the forum!! _________________

I haven't used Unity, but the general consensus seems to be that it sucks. If I were a Ubuntu user, I'd probably switch to something else, like Mint. _________________ I refuse to live in a country like this - and I'm not leaving. - Michael Moore |

Try Linuxmint 12. This has the first efforts at the new gnome or should it be the gnu gnome.
This has not been well received and it is being worked on by 'Mint' to recover the good bits from the old system that we all loved.
Another Linuxmint product is LMDE. A system based on Debian Testing with a Mint flavour. It lags behind Linuxmint with the eye candy and, at the moment, the new gnome.
Lastly there is Linuxmint 12 KDE if you must have a KDE based system.
Both Linuxmint 12s are Ubuntu based and largely use Ubuntu repositories.
I have found them user friendly and they have quite a polite community - none of this 'masters of the universe' twaddle.
Costs you nowt to try.

Well, LINUS ditched GNOME for XFCE, saying that XFCE is a step down
from GNOME 2 - but a huge step up from GNOME 3. More here.
Anyway, XUBUNTU 10.04LTS = UBUNTU 10.04LTS with XFCE 4.6 is an
nice replacement for GNOME. XUBUNTU 11.10 uses XFCE 4.8 which also
will be included in the 12.04LTS version. Theres rumours this version may
get commercial (payed) support as an option.
Or why not just go with the mother of (most) distributions - DEBIAN .
A good compromise between stability and almost bleeding edge is to use
the KDE or XFCE desktops from http://www.debian-desktop.org/ plus other
applications and packages from http://backports-master.debian.org/ . _________________ Linux User #432929

I think of all things (gasp!) I am probably going to settle for CentOS..
Clunky and nasty, but the work servers use it, so it only makes sense to use it full time, since I'm now the only Linux guy at my work.. I will likely learn to enjoy it, even if some of the things aren't quite as automatic as I've gotten accustomed to. Anything is better than the toy-like interface that is Unity..
I think it does make sense for Canonical to go the Unity direction, since, after all, true computers will likely not be commonplace in most households of the future, being instead replaced with tablets, and other "platform" devices that essentially have an app repository and are realy more like a web browser + app device. There is no doubt in my mind that if Canonical wants to be profitable in the user space of the future, they are going to focus less on an operating system, and more toward creating a viable "Platform" that can be used in these future consumer devices.
I of course understand this, but in my opinion they should have left Ubuntu alone and gone with a separate product instead of completely trading in their corporate customers in lieu of attracting customers from the peanut gallery... Two products, guys...
I dunno.. Debian does sound like a nice alternative- I have used Debian in the past on my PPC devices, and I have been fooling around with kFreeBSD, so who knows, it's all kind of up in the air for now.. _________________

The feeling is mutual. Its good to see a Xandros employee in here. I don't check in that often but I was beginning to wonder if Xandros was still in business and still had employees. I think a lot of us would still be willing to purchase a new Xandros desktop if they ever brought it back.
As to the question, I've switch to Mepis and don't use Ubuntu, but I've looked at Unity on live cds and I don't like it.
I've been happy with Mepis. Its very solid, has a good community and lots of updated software in the community repos. But it doesn't have the professional presentation and Xandros file manager that Xandros had so I still miss Xandros. I've thought about checking out CentOS because I figured they'd be stable. I've also been tempted to check out Mageia. Which is an rpm based distro by the deloper that started Mandrake. From the screen shots it has a nice polished look and it also has a version of the mandrake control center which I loved in PCLinuxOS. Because I prefer a stable release to a rolling release I have abandoned PCLinuxOS. I also still prefer Debian based. In short, I am still waiting for Xandros 5. _________________ Goodbye my friends. I wish Xandros well. Be wary of Microsoft, they are not your friend. See you at PCLinuxOS or Mepis. |

I think Ubuntu should get rid of Unity. As for myself I use what I have always used - Windows. _________________ AMD Athlon 64 3200+ - 2 GHz | 3 GB DDR | 250 GB HDD | Nvidia Gforce 7900 GT Graphics | DVD Burner | Windows 7 - No fate but what we make... |

Kona, a while back, maybe years, I was thinking you were heading into college. Did you do that? How well are things going for you?

Unity sucks and so does Gnome 3...
Gnome 2 was functional, but it's code has been getting outdated and has been poorly maintained.
Mate isn't stable yet; I get the impression many are going to XFCE. _________________ Linux simply works for me...
