It speaks well for Xandros that some people do take the time to come back and have a look. I'm here because a customer's PC which I had set up to dual boot Xandros/Win2k came in for repair. Out of idle curiosity I went into the Xandros side and then to the forum.
In it's day, Xandros was a very good distro. It still feels nice.
PCLOS and Ubuntu for me.
Regards to all

I use Ubuntu on my desktops and CentOS for my work servers.
It would be great if Xandros would ship a Total Conversion for Kubuntu / Debian, as I think they certainly could distribute that without worrying about the GPL3 issues since they wouldn't be distributing any code that was gpl3 licensed, just their own code.
I think their arrangements with MS prohibit them from distributing GPL3 code, which essentially bars them from distributing Xandros as a complete OS.. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that is the case...
This effectively would allow them to work around that issue. _________________

It is not the case. It's just that the business model of selling desktop Linux proved to be unprofitable and there's nobody around to maintain the distro. Everyone had to get paying jobs. |

And Xandros failure was not the failure of the product at all. I paid for all my Xandros installs and upgrades. Too bad so many others were only interested in the CHEAP way to use Xandros.
Today another company seems determined to enter the prepackaged desk top market. They also offer a free version but they have larger, more versatile version's for a fee. I don't know how much but it will surely fail if the public is unwilling to pay for the time and effort of developing and maintaining good products.

I wonder if it would be worth it, for someone to buy the rights to the proprietary Xandros File Manager.
Thats what made Xandros so unique from other linux distros.
If someone pulled it off, I'd use whatever distro they applied it to.
I install Xandros 4.5 every once in awhile to see if I can install some modern stuff witout breaking anything.
Since geekydude's Xandros repos went down, I download it from Asus.

Currently running Xandros 4.5 on my desktop....Debian Mint on my netbook, and dualbooting Windows 7/Easy Peasy on my Hewlett Packard notebook. _________________ Registered Linux User #404122

I like Pardus 2011 very userfriendly with all media codes pre-installed:

So give it a try. It's a nice alternative instead of Xandros. |

people who used Xandros, sometimes get used to doing things 'the Debian Way'...
As such...Debian Mint is a good choice.
LOTS of distros these days include the media codecs neccessary to watch movies or listen to music.
I don't even need to install the W32 codecs anymore....for the most part gstreamer's codecs take care of that. _________________ Registered Linux User #404122

I have to admit Windows was my honest answer with a dash of ios. We do keep at least one ubuntu build in the house but overall i got tired of the lack of driver support. I never found another linux community that was as warm and welcoming as this one and the distro zealots didn't help. It is interesting to see how the linux base has devloped into products like meego and android. It gives one hope for a better future for linux and it's users.
Well thats my 6 month check in. Hi all. Hope you are all well. _________________ Judyz

Nice to hear from judyz again.
Each of us has a unique use for our computer equipment and our likes and dislikes are shaped to this usage. My equipment is not very new and I have never found the lack of drivers that you allude to.
The Mint community seems to be very helpful so that is where I have finished up.
All the best for the future,

Hello All,
Currently using the Linux Mint Debian Edition desktop the most. The other desktops are running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. All desktops are running 64-bit versions. I'm planning on staying away from Unity and GNOME 3 for as long as I can. I might have to go to XFCE (or GNOME 3 without the shell) in the future. The server was running ClearOS 5.2 until a hard drive failure. New drives are in place and awaiting the release of ClearOS Enterprise 6.x 64-bit. _________________ Unregistered Desktop Linux User since 1999 |

Checking back into this forum in the faint hope that something has changed. Oh, well.....
I was one who purchased my Xandros licenses from (I think) v.2.5 through to 4.5. I felt it was an excellent operating system, but still with access to software and a very good forum for support. It eased my transition from XP into linux.
A hardware upgrade saw the end of Xandros for me, although I did briefly install it on an old machine when bad weather upset my satellite dish for a few days as Xandros remains the ONLY linux OS that I have found capable of dealing with winmodems out of the box.
I guess the Xandros people took the MS dollar and left, but if MS thought they would stop Linux, well, they were wrong.
I came across Xandros again on a netbook I purchased a few years ago, and it was like coming home to an old friend. I see that there is Presto also from Xandros, so somewhere there is a heart beating.
For me, I am happy using Ubuntu on our machines, but I wish that Xandros had the decency to tell their loyal following what they were doing.

I started my own distro.
It's nothing sexy, but it works for me.
The thing I liked most about Xandros was the file manager (I bet that was true for you too! ). So a couple of weeks ago, we began development of a new app that will help alleviate my Xandros file manager withdrawls (even though it's not a file manager in and of itself).
My applications Dev (sqlpython) is currently working on an app that contains one tab with a control panel that allows users to change what belongs in the control panel, and which category each applet belongs to. The other tab will contain a "my computer" style app that will allow users to interact with their systems and devices more akin to the way Windoze does it.
The work has only just begun on it, so RevLinuxOS 2.0 will take a while to get released. I'm working on learning a new language that will allow me to create a nicer GUI for the Remastersys installer.
The community is small and posting activity is slow, but we communicate regularly with the community to make sure they aren't frustrated due to not knowing what's going on.
Anyway, that's what I've been up to since I moved on from Xandros.
It's nice to see some old friends are still hanging around with each other. _________________ geekydude
