Longer names under the desktop icons end up making one long line instead of two lines. I've noticed on others who use Mandrake, Red Hat, SuSe and other distros that the names of desktop icons work like in Windows, where longer names will adjust to two or three lines under the icon. This makes it much easier to line up the icons to look neater on the desktop.

With one long line for the name, it looks very "Mac"-like and clunky to me.

Is there a way to change the default for this?

I do like having the icons lined up vertically on the right side (which, I know, is also "Mac"-like, but I am right-handed), but they line up much more neatly if the longer names would make two lines and be under the icon rather than spread out.

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Sincerely,
Richard

They should wrap if they are long enough, but they have to be about the width of 32 characters.
In KDE3 the maximum width is much smaller and looks better. It doesn't appear to be configurable, although you can change the font.

There has to be a way to do this by editing a kde file. I also use Lycoris which uses KDE 2.2 and it does not do this. I would either do a search on google or email tech support.

Does this mean that in Lycoris' KDE 2.2 that the names of icons wrap neatly with fewer characters?

What wording should I use for the Google search, please?

Thanks again to Tranter and Michael.

Yes it wraps neatly in Lycoris. Do a word wrap in kde search or different variations.

Confused Thanks, Michael, but I had no luck with searching for Word Wrap for Names of desktop icons. I tried both a Google search and also a search on the KDE website.

Any other suggestions?

Richard L.

Have you tried emailing the support address? There is a way to do it, the question is where. I looked and poked around but have no idea where it could be. Sad
