Greetings, programs! New member.

(The other Sims 2 thread was so old I started this one.)

My son is building a new computer from scratch (AM64 dual core, 4GB DDR SDRAM, nVidia 590 mother-of-all-boards, and I forget just what the nVidia 256MB graphics card is). I and one of his friends are providing his tech support and actually building the machine and installing software. He wants to try Xandros but is concerned about compatibility issues. Neither of us have any experience with Xandros or any other Linux distro.

My specific question is regarding the game "Sims 2," specifically, whether it will run properly under Xandros or if a Windows emulator must be used, and if so, which emulator is recommended.

We've already installed a trial of WinXP, but he hasn't yet paid for the software because he hasn't yet decided on which OS to use.

Thanks much.

It does not look like the Sims 2 will run on Linux, at all.

Cedega, by Transgaming is the best gaming "emulator" for Linux, and you will have the best chance using it.

So far though, it seems that The Sims 2's copy protection technology prevents it from being run on Linux.

Ah.

Thanks much, Monster. A flawless reply--concise and to-the-point. Cool

'Preciate it, dude.

Now I have to post in another forum about how I can't install the Xandros Pro v4 trial at all, because the I can't boot from the DVD I burned, because it ain't bootable in the first place.

I'm REALLY confused. But thanks again for your reply.

Hi Monster_user
Check out the minimum and recommended linux system requirement for Sim 2. May be possible to solve your problem through configuration.
Linux Kernel 2.2 or higher, Glibc 2.1.3 or higher, XFree86 4.0 or higher or equivalent, 350Mhz Celeron/Pentium II/Duron/Athlon or faster or equivalent, 64Mb of ram, 128 recommended, sound card supporting OSS or ALSA, video card capable of 16 bit color and 800x600 resolution, nvidia GeForce GPU recommended with 16mb of video ram.

Thanks, but I think those are the specs for the Sims 1, not the Sims 2.

Sims 2 Requirements.
OS: Windows Vista/XP/ME/2000/98 (Windows 95/NT/ME not supported)
Processor: 1.3 Ghz processor (2.0 for Vista)
Memory: 512 MB RAM (1GB for Vista)
HDD: 5.0 GB (for base game and expansions)
Video Card: T&L-capable video card with 32 MB of video RAM
CD/DVD-Rom Speed: 8x
Sound Card: DirectX 7.0 compatible
DirectX version: DirectX 7.0

There are no requirements listed for the Linux operating system, but running the WINE API layer requires additional resources,...

Kernel 2.6
Xorg 7
2.0ghz processor
1024mb / 1GB ram
64mb Geforce GPU.
A Wine based compatibility kit is required. Such as PlayOn Linux, or Cadega.

Gameplay compatibility is iffy, but some users have gotten the game to run. You may have better luck with the Sims 3.
