So I normally don't use this OS but unfortunately my pc got hacked and I lost my xp Boot.ini file and NTbootdd.sys file. I have a NTFS and a FAT32 dual boot(well had one). Tried creating a new boot.ini file and save it to my C: drive but it said that I did not have permission to access disc/C:. I think it may be because I don't have administrative privlages. The problem with that is I don't know the pass. This machine was given to me as a gift with all this stuff preinstalled and I really would just like to get my windows back. All my other windows files are still intact except for the ones listed above. I tried going to the Configure(expert) and enter init=/bin/bash, then enter my new pass and the reboot, but that was password protected aswell. I tried the whole CTRL+I thing and that din't work either. How can I get to the admin so I can save stuff to my C: drive? |

The easiest way is to download one of the Linux live CD's like Ubuntu, Mepis, Knoppix, PCLinuxOS, and the list goes on, create either a bootable CD or a USB thumb drive. Boot up on the CD or USB drive, open the file browser and drag and drop the files that you want from the bad Windows drive to another drive. _________________ Ed Richards

or you could download and burn the iso for ophcrack.
there are 2 versions:one version for xp and one version for vista.
boot these cds up and let the program start.
it will find and display the passwords for you.
once you have the passwords you can repair the missing and corrupted files.
but that is if you still want windows. _________________ the only stupid question there is is the question that is not asked!

It has been a while, been playing with my machine. Managed to change the admin issue, can login full root now. That did not fix the issue with my files though. I did some searching and found out that my NTFS partition was read only, so I couln't save my boot.ini file anyways....so I thought. I burned a copy of Puppy copy and pasted the file to my C: drive and thought that would fix my WindowsXp booting issue, but it didn't. How can I check my MBR to see what is booting and what isn't? I use LILO I think( that is what flashes at the top of my screen for half a millisecond at boot up). Are there any console commands that I can use to fix the only error that I can think of that is left?
Thanks again for all of your help. |

Once you have the machine up with a boot disk you will have to use the mount command to make it writable if you boot Linux to single user mode you would do something like mount -n -o remount,rw / for a LiveCd this command would change instead of / you would have to use the mount path like /mnt or /media or /disks depending on the distro the other thing with NTFS is sometimes you have to modify the usmask of the partition in /etc/fstab it has been too many years but I believe the proper umask for writing is 0222 a Google search will give you the exact code. _________________

I used Puppy to save my boot.ini file to my C: drive. So the file is where it needs to be now. I think that the Windows boot issue resides in LILO now. This is what my lilo.conf file looks like:
boot=/dev/hda
install=/boot/cboot.b
message=/boot/splash.lilo
timeout=300
map=/boot/map
prompt
fix-table
lba32
read-only
disk=/dev/hda bios=0x80
image=/vmlinuz
label=[]s_Desktop_2.5
vga=0xf04
root=/dev/hda6
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.24-x1.gz
append="rw acpi=on "
image=/vmlinuz
label=Safe_Video_Mode
vga=0xf04
root=/dev/hda6
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.24-x1.gz
append="3 rw acpi=on "
image=/vmlinuz
label={}ure_(Expert)
vga=normal
root=/dev/hda6
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.24-x1.gz
append="single rw acpi=on "
My boot options used to be as follows:
1. Windows XP
2. Xandros Desktop 2.5
3. Save Video Mode
4. Configure(Expert)
I have a single hard drive with a NTFS and FAT32(or vFat in Xandros boot manager). I also saw a reiserfs partition.
Can I edit my lilo.conf to add Windows back to my boot options and run /sbin/lilo? Could I use Puppy to do that? What would be my best option? I am very new to this command line programming stuff. Again, thanks for the help and support. |

Xandros hasn't released a new version in several years, and a lot of people have moved on. Yep, it's pretty dead. _________________ I refuse to live in a country like this - and I'm not leaving. - Michael Moore |

You are and Administrator and that is the best reply you could give me for this thread?!?! So because there hasn't been a new release you can't help with what is already going on. What a fantastic forum. So glad that I found it. |

The forum was unattended by Xandros employees and filled up with spam. Two of us were allowed by Xandros to delete the spam and ban users. That's all we can do. There are also moderators who can delete users but not ban them. We are all volunteers and have no formal connections to Xandros. The role is only with the forum.
So no, no-one but the secretive Xandros Corp knows what they plan and don't plan. I'm as frustrated by the apparent abandonment of the OS by the company as anyone! _________________ War doesn't determine who's right - only who's left. |

If I know the answer to your questions, I will answer them. Because Xandros hasn't released a new version and many of the more knowledgable users have moved on to different distros, it's not as easy to get an answer here as it once was. But rest assured, if any of those who still come here can help you, they will.
I wasn't made an administrator because I possess great knowledge, it's more along the line of I was dumb enough to volunteer. _________________ I refuse to live in a country like this - and I'm not leaving. - Michael Moore |

If you can boot Xandros I need you to open a console su to root and post the output of mount and use fdisk to print the partition layout and I will try to get you up and running, _________________

So here is the deal...
I am frustrated and I am taking it out on everyone. So my sincere apologize if I have offended anyone.
I used the code:
other=/dev/hda1
label=Windows_XP
table=/dev/hda
then saved my lilo.conf using /sbin/lilo -v -v
Windows Xp was added back to my boot options, and low and behold, it booted right up. Good news right? Not really. My Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 files were corrupt. So I thought to fix it I would just uninstall it, then reinstall. Well I guess I missed the part about how the only way to remove any trace of Kaspersky was to use their removal tool(I used add/remove in control panel).Anyways, downloaded it, used it, it said it was removed, restart for changes to take effect....blah,blah,blah.
I rebooted my pc to get a message after hardware detection to <press F1 to resume>. That's strange, never seen that before, ok, F1. At the boot menu, pressed enter to boot Windows and got a lovely black screen with a white bar at the bottom that seemed to be loading something. After completion of the "loading" that it was doing, it put me at the XP splash screen. After about 10 seconds my pc reboots and I get the same message about the F1 key. There are no error messages and From what I can see, everything Is detected.
I have read that this could be a) a BIOS problem or, b) the CMOS battery is going low and needs replacing. I have no issues getting into Xandros though...well, i did have to do a hard reboot after trying three time to get into Windows and Xandros froze after it said initializing kernel. Left windows alone since then.
My Bios is old, like it hasn't been updated in five years old. So it gives me very minimal information. If that is the issue, what do I need to be looking for?
Thanks for the help and again I am sorry if I offened anyone. |
