Is USB enabled in BIOS? What are you trying to plug into the USB port?
Try hot-plugging a flash-drive or memory-card reader (with card), wait a few moments to check if a window pops up asking you what to do....
More details needed before anyone can give a helpful reply.

Maybe misunderstood you in my previous reply.
First I thought you meant that you had a USB cable. Silly!
Now it looks to me like you have cable-internet.

usb is usually a hotplug item is your cable modem supports usb it should be no problem but remember using the usb port on your model will disable the ethernet connections on the modem. this happens frequently with dsl also

I can not get ther driver of my usb modem to make it work. It is a dial up bought in ebay england. see description at:

you have to connect that with Linux like you connect to other systems

Any idea if it would work in my eeepc701 SD? I am farly new to linux...
A PC technichian in Gen Innes -NSW Australia tried unsuccessfully.
