I tried installing Limewire on X4.5 but it requires java. Downloaded jre-6u17-linux-i586.bin from Java's site. I snooped around and found some instructions but aparently don't seem aplicable to X4.5. Directorys they say to go to are not there or are in difrent places.

Also trying very hard to understand Linux file system. The shells or console windows dont show certain files and directorys, such important ones like "Descktop" If i type in synatx to change to Desktop I can get there but why can't i see it from the parent directory by typing dir? Makes me crazy. I can see everthing when i use file managger and turn on hidden fles and all file systems but not in the shell programs? Looked for a switch, may be there is a command to enter to see everything.
some direction would be appriciated, Thanks, Jon

In order to see hidden files from the command line type ls -a.
For a newer (not newest) java download http://www.vogelefamily.info/xandros/jre/4.0/xandros-sun-jre-1.6.0_1.6.0+update03.deb and use the alien trick to convert it, it should work with Limewire.

Java 1.6 is available in xd45k2sp:.
http://www.piratesladd.com/repository/updates/

Latest Limewire depends on: debconf, sun-java6-jre
And recommended: libc6 (>= 2.3.6), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.0.3),
libgnome2-0 (>= 2.14.1), libstdc++5 (>= 1:3.3.4-1),
zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.1)

Updating Java to version 1.6 may do the trick. But it could
also be necessary to update GTK, also found on xd45k2sp.

Link to XD45k2sp does not work. It displays following
The requested URL /repository/xandros_45etch/updates/servicepack/xd45k2sp.zip was not found on this server.

I will try again tomorrow just in case it is a temporary problem. Please adviseif there is an alternate site to download. Thanks, Jon

Got xd452sp.zip from the new address just fine under Xandros 4.5. I tried extracting and extracting to a directory I made but it reports no files to extract. I copied to CD and rebooted under WXP, tried extracting with same results. I downloaded a second time under WXP and I tried with WXP to extract and it reports the same. If I just double click with WXP on the file it says compressed file is invalid or corupt.

When running X4.5 and Icheck properties it does say I need zip 2.0 to make work. Can't find info on zip extraction program in Xandros, looked in Accesories as this makes sence.

I just don't know how to make xd452sp.zip do its thing.
Thanks, Jon

File did not come down complete, needed to re try 6 times and finaly got it in full, I hope. Kind of weird, when it downloaded incomplete and said done the first 5 times I assumed it was all there because it said DONE. Only picked up on this as all the previous downloads were difrent sizes.

Now, following instructions on how to install on Pirate Sladd site (or do I follow these instructions).

1) says add deb file:/var /auto.................................contrib non free to your sources list. I don't know where my sources list is located so I can add this? do I start with the : or the / when I do find the place to add it

2)Says launch synaptic. Whre is it as I cant find it. Do I need get it and install it?

Getting closer, Thanks, Jon

Try Opera, due to its "Resume/Restart/Stop" function,
when theres issues with interrupted downloads.

Its an standard ZIP file, which contains the ISO-file that has
to be burned to an CD before it can be used.

Enable the CD "repository" within XN. Or edit your "source.list"
within the "/etc/apt" folder.

PostPosted: Tue Nov 24, 2009 2:08 am    Post subject: problems installing upgrade xd45k2sp Reply with quote

Got symantic up and runnning
got deb file :/ var/autofs/................in my sorces list

Trying to follow instructions that came with xd452sp

1 add deb file (done no problem)
2 Lanch synatptic>settings>repositorys>select file : var auto............drom.1 (done)
3 Go settings > preferences>system upgrade and select default (done) and then apply buttton and then OK button because I cant go anywhee until this window goes away. Instructions do not say anything of this.
4 Click reload (done) shows 18700 listed, 1010 installed 0 broken 0 to install 0 to remove.

Right here is the beginning of where I have absolutly no idea what to do.

5 Click Mark all upgrades icon (warning window pops up, mark aditional required changes) instructions say to deselect what want to keep. (I would think I want to keep them all, heck I don't know) I DID NOT DESELECT ANYTHING, PROBOBLY WRONGBUT I WOULD NOT KNOW WHAT TO LEAVE OR TO KEEP ANYWAY. Thelist in the warning window has a large number of things. I highlight the first one and then hit select buton (to deselect it presume as instructions say to do. It happens to be X system as I recal and I know I want to keep it so i do as the instructions say to do)and the window goes away. did not give me a chance to do anything with thos 50 or so items. the window just goes away. now the only window is Synaptic Package Manager. with difrent "packages" like Amatuer radio, base system communication etc listed on the left. On the right side there are indevidual pieces of the highlighted selection on the left.

6 iInstructions Say to click mark button, there certainly is no mark button, but there is a mark all upgrades button, is this what they want? So I click the mark all upgrades button.

7 Says click apply button, yes it is there so I do

8 Click ok. Synaptic goes and downloads for the CD 30 MB or so and then when it come time to install it starts with keyboard stuff andn says it may take some time. I do it 3 times giving an hour or so each but nothing happens.

I looked at the forums to see if anyone else has had dificultys like this. I guess I iam the only idiot who can't make sense of it all. Something simple I am doing wrong about step # 5 where the available buttons are not in the instructions. Is it posible the instructions are incorect? or The syanptic is a difrent version nessitationg difrent instructions.

Heres what I would like to acomplish with the upgrade, perhaps some guidnce

A Get Sun java 1.6 so Limewire for XD4.5 will install ( and work would be nice too)
B Get any updates that will make other programs I may want to install work. both various games and applications. Can't run Machinarium as of now because of lbnss#-so is not there
C Get any upgrades that make system more efficient and trouble free
D Get anything else that I can get without causing problems, suggestions would be appriciated.

Going to bed now, just a few hours beforeI need to get up for work. Thanks for all your patience with me so far, any suggestions well appriciated. Jon

Try to read the "Help" > "Contents" part within Synaptic.
And also the "Note" at: http://piratesladd.com/repository/updates/

Some quick Synaptic tips:
-Use "Standard Upgrade" instead of "Smart Upgrade".
-Uncheck "Download package files only" to install/upgrade packages.
-Use "Search" to pick preferred packages/updates.

PostPosted: Tue Nov 24, 2009 11:34 pm    Post subject: Still trouble upgrading 4.5 with synaptic Reply with quote

I read the help last nite and again tonite completley and believe I understand how symantic works but aparently I still am doing something wrong. Synaptic has step by step instructions on how to do an upgrade. I followed them with the exception of not choosing "smart upgrade" instead I used "default upgrade" as suggested by both Doctore and Pirate Sladd. These are the steps I took last nite and I still have the same results. Results are Items to be upgraded are copied from CD, then when window comes up "installing software it just seems to stop. The hard drive light flickers irraticly about 2 times a second never stoping. When I open the "details" window it reports "configuring console data" and has text regarding key map layout about 50 words worth. This window never changes and I need question if the program is locked up. It says " this can take some time"Does this suggest several minuits or several hours? It has been 2 hours now, one would figure I be done by now. I will leave it on over nite I guess.

Now for the conflicting instructions. If one may please go download the instructions from Pirate sladd's site and read step # 5. It does not sync with instruction in Synaptic and Synaptic does not appear to have the selection butons and features Pirats Sladd is requesting me to use and do. When trying to follow instructions from Pirate Sladd, It says "click mark all upgrades icon" Then it says "DESELECT those packages you eventualy want to keep". I just don't understand this statement or how to do it. Even if I figure out how to deselect those said packages I want to keep, how do I know which ones I want and which ones I dont. There is like 130 of them as I recall. I definitly will make more than 1 mistake if I try to decide based on limited knolage I have

Then the next step # 6 it says Click mark button. there is no mark button to cliclk anywhere, ther is a mark all upgrades but I am quite sure this is not what is intended to do. I need not go any further as I cant get past step # 5. Following instructions in Synaptic does not seem to work either. 4 times I and I will leave it on over nite this evening in case it gets blessed.

1 more thing I can't figure out. Doctore gave me some tips 1 saying "uncheck Download package file only" I can not find this check box anywhre in Synaptic. I have clearly selected the CD rom for source under repositories. Under Repositories there is a button thaat switches between " source deb-src and binanary deb" what should be selected here?

I got to be doing something wrong or overlooking something simple. I went over and over and can't seem to figure this out. Help much appriciated, Jon

I don't see any Mark button either. But if you right click on a program in the search results, you have to option to Mark for installation. Maybe that's it?

I have a feeling this is one of those things that if somebody who has done it before was there to walk you through it, you'd have it done in short order.

The instructions was made in swedish, using an newer version
of Synaptic and afterwards translated in a hurry to english.

Anyway, if you didnt "Unmark", (=deselect. Avmarkera in swedish),
any package, then skip number 6, where some words by mistake
was left out. It should have been "Mark for installation" (Markera
för installation) by rightclicking and then "Mark" (button). This is
due to that some packages are depending on others.

So, jump to number 7 and click "Apply" (button). Finally click
on "Apply" (button and not OK) as number 8.

Sorry for not noticing these translation mistakes before.

This is what I have been doning the last 3 nites as it is what makes logical sence. It is also what the instructions in the help file says to follow.

I found the hang up. I needed to turn on terminal output. The window now allows mo to click tab and hit the ok buttton that seemed not to work before. It may be i just didn't use tab to highlight the ok button in the default smaller window.

There sure are many choices dealing with lbnss, mail settings and others that I did not know what to answer. tried to stay with the default or no change options. be a mirical if system works after. Do I ever feel like a dummy now! Thanks, Jon
