what exactly did you try ?

When downloading a binary from the internet you need to set the "execute" bit before you can run it (chmod +x filename.bin).

it's also possible that the version of Google Earth is to new for your xandros, what version are you using ?

n/p

It's an extra security feature added into Linux.

By default any binary (executable) that you download is stripped from the "execute" bit so you can not accidentally execute it (this makes it a bit harder to get an unwanted sruff like a trojan or virus).

Locate the program then in a console as root run chmod a+x /path/to/file

Its a good software to see your location. There are 18 layers that It is using to show all over the world images. Its getting new 2009 images are very good quality. Also use Three Dimensional. That is very good.
Thanks

You should be able to open a admin Xandros File Manager, locate the file, & right click>permissions to change the execute permissions without going to a command line.

O.k., I've installed and re-installed Google Earth and 'googleearthspeedfix' about ten times, always with the same result (how do you define 'insanity'?) The GE install goes seamlessly, installing to /opt/google-earth. The speedfix also seems to go without a hitch. Anyway, I end up with 'drm_nowaitVblank.so' in /usr/lib and 'googleearth' (with the 'LD_PRELOAD="./drm_nowwaitVblank.so" modification before "exec "./googleearth-bin S*') in /usr/bin.

1. Google Earth installed in /opt/google-earth.
2. 'drm_nowaitVblank.so' in /usr/lib.
3. 'googleearth' (with appropriate line edit) in /usr/bin.

It is so slow as to be totally useless and I get the following error messages:
ERROR: ld.so: object './drm_nowaitVBlank.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored
Then the usual:
do_wait: drmwaitVBlank returned -1, IRQs don't seem to be working correctly. Try running with LIBGL_THROTTLE_REFRESH and LIB_SYNC_REFRESH unset.

I bought this machine specifically so I could have Google Earth whilst travelling, and will not swap out Xandros for XP. I'm also reluctant to switch to another Linux (i.e. Ubuntu) system.

If anyone should have any useful insights on this conundrum I'd be delighted to hear from you. I'll just be sitting here in front of my computer with a bottle of scotch (figuratively).... Thanks for sharing the post...

googleearth package in the geek connection repository worked very well when I had the default Xandros installed. All the information about adding that repository is in the eeeuser wiki: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/addingxandrosrepos
