Just saw this post over at Freespire forums:
Due to big changes in the market, Xandros had had to shift its resources and as a result the Freespire/Xandros project is on hold...
I have however been working on a new os that has the look and feel of Linspire but is no way affiliated with Xandros. Its a significant upgrade.
This project is a joint-effort made possible between myself and Carlos Laborde (Creator of iMagic OS)

I am beginning to wonder if Xandros as a company will even be around 6 months from now. _________________ Moving On Up....to Ubuntu 10.04 |

Well Thorpe contacted Xandros by phone a few months ago (IIRC) and last time I checked he was not employed by them but he was somewhat of an official liaison to the community.
also to be clear, the distro that he's building with this guy from iMagicOS will not be related to Xandros or Linspire (as I understand it's a Ubuntu-based distro with the look&feel of the older Linspire's like Linspire Five-O).
As for the company Xandros. All points in the direction of the EEE-PC so it looks like they are putting the Xandros/Freespire distro into the freezer (maybe permanently who knows ?) and are putting all their efford on the netbook maket (with Asus I guess).
Maybe they think that this will be a better way to get revenue from the CNR technology they got when they bought Linspire. And if CNR turns out to be a great success maybe the distro building will also stop (depending on how much they can make with a commerical distro in a world where there are hundereds of free distro's around). _________________

was hoping there would be an xandros 5 but guess we can't have everything..
I am at this moment running my Eee using puppy Linux 4.1.
I have Xandros 4.5 on the Eee default and full version.
I have attached a U.S.B external dial up modem, 19 inch monitor and a usb mouse.. then ran out of usb ports.
Since i cannot play with new versions of xandros I am finding other means of keeping busy.
on my desktop system Pentium 930, I have Win xp, Xandros 4.2,
PcLinux and Ubuntu 8.04. oh almost forgot Kubuntu 8.1..
As they say playtime is everything.
good luck all

For the USB ports problem there is a simple solution called a "Hub" _________________

"Xandros_4.5/EeePC-SDK" release gave some hope. This was even better:
http://www.xandros.com/news/press_releases/xandros_acquires_linspire.html
But the silence from "Xandros" since july 2008 and the statement (without real
explanation): http://forum.freespire.org/showthread.php?t=18829&page=10
"...shift its resources and as a result the Freespire/Xandros project is on hold..."
makes the customers and community worried.
"Xandros" was one of the few "Linux" distributions on the right track. But when
"Professional 4.2" (Sarge 3.1) and "Freespire 2.0" (Ubuntu 7.04) isnt maintained,
then their customers and users are forced elsewhere!
Judging from the shrinking of "Xandros 4.5 DVD" to "4.5 CD", an experienced
programmer at "Xandros" could have created an "Freespire 4.5" release with
"CNR" funtionality within lesser time than a week. And makinge it available
as torrent download (=free advertising).
If "Freespire" is ment to be an testbed, why not use it for that purpose?
And let the community test new kernels, drivers and other things which
without doubt needs to be tested for "Xandros" next (?) release... _________________ Linux User #432929

Actually had a spare hub sitting on the desk but I think the matter was there are so many good Linux operating systems out there now Xandros has a lot of catching up to do.
I have purchased each version of Xandros since number 1 but being faithful to a distribution
doesnt seem to matter .. we can care but they do not..
keep on trucking

I have been saving some dollars so I would be able to order as soon as Xandros Ver 5 was released. I guess I will just keep them around now, just in case all these sad stories get proven wrong.
In the meantime I will just continue to run Xandros Ver 4.2 until it breaks down from old age. I have no desire to learn a different OS. I am not an impatient, gotta be first, type of person. I have Simply Mepis and Ubuntu but I don't want to keep using either of those when I have Xandros working so well.
I have enough trouble typing on the laptop and desktop keyboards. I keep zooming in to see the text better. So I don't see how those smaller units will be much help for me. I will just keep my obsolete hardware with my outdated OS and keep on chugging along. At least it works and I am a bit richer for not spending on the latest what ever released.
Now, I hope some one surprises me with a new release announcement for Xandros 5.

Hmm, it would seem all the energy is going toward the eeepc. Looking at this I would guess there will be a Xandros 5, but for the eeepc. Looks like Linspire was acquired just to get CNR for eeepc. Where does this leave Freespire, one has to wonder? _________________ Moving On Up....to Ubuntu 10.04 |

Poor Freespire. Xandros was building up the hopes of all the people at the Freespire forums with promises of a Xandros/Freespire5 alpha release and then just to pull the rug out from underneath them..... Bummer _________________ Moving On Up....to Ubuntu 10.04 |

More like thorpe was building up hope, Xandros never made any such statement concerning an alpha...

Yes, Companies don't seem to care about customer loyalty. I saw this with other companies aswell. The customers stay loyal to the company and they companies takes advantage of that.
I thought that Linspire would be different but since it went down hill for them (when they let a bunch of their employees go) their attitude to their userbase changed (they used to listen, now it's like they don't even exist anymore). _________________

I totally agree with you....
This has been the mentality of Xandros for a long time, and it seems that they just can't quit getting in their own way (especially for desktop customers).
I find this kind of behavior appalling because they are making money off of free software that is written by many unpaid volunteers in the open source community and do nothing to pay them back.
Secondly, they get free support from their communities and don't even have the decency to listen to their feedback or what they want in a distro.
They have no love for anyone that doesn't pay them big bucks for business level software and support.
It's worse than a freaking Greek tragedy (IMHO).
But I must ask why we should expect different after they got in bed with Microsith. _________________ geekydude
