Two weeks ago I downloaded Xandros Server trial. Loaded perfectly on my 3 year old Compaq Pavillion, single AMD processor w/2 ide drives.
Promply ordered Xandros Server and a new Dell A1640N with dual core Intel and SATA HD. Received both yesterday.
Opened packages. Read manuals for Xandros Server preparing for install. Noticed on CD package that if the seal was broken I could not return product.
Proceeded to load trial disk previously used on the Compaq. Starts to load then hangs. Nothing but a dark screen.
This machine is prenty much plain vanilla. No HWraid, fancy video cards nothing.
I bought this product believing it would be a great alternative to Windoze server products. However don't have time or inclination to mess with it.
Where do I send it for a refund?
Wally

same problem using the Trial edition on my Dell Dimension 5100. I had hoped when 4x came out that Xandros would have updated the kernel for more SATA support (3x wouldn't install either due to this) but it seems however they've compiled the kernel doesn't include the latest SATA drivers. They aren't alone though, many of the proprietary distros come with SATA install problems. Ubuntu though loads on anything I throw it at, but it's far from perfect too, stability issues, random lockups, it's not "all that" either like people claim.
If you really want to use Xandros and don't mind slowing your PC down to yesterday's technology try going into your bios and see if it let's you emulate IDE mode. Doing that let me install 3x and Linspire (which has the same SATA problems) but both also were missing needed sound chip modules so between that and "downgrading" my pc like that I went back to Ubuntu. You might have luck though and SATA is your only hangup.

Didn't buy commercial OS to be kludged together with dated drives. I installed Xandros Server on an ide desktop machine to test it before purchasing it. Who would have thought wouldn't run on industry standard server and modern drives.
Xandros Server is an impressive product IMO. But what good is it if it won't run on server class machine.

I purchased the Xandros 4.0 desktop and was very impressed with it's ease of use factor and it's windoze look and feel which has been the redominate rejection of my customer base in the passed when I have attempted to draw them away from M$.
As a result I too downloaded the trial version of Xandros server and was pleased with the installation. So... took the plunge for the real thing and spent the $400 plus dollars for it.
WHAT A COLLOSAL MISTAKE!
After a tremendous amount of time, effort, and total frustration I have come to understand that Xandros doesn't support the Intel ICH7R (today probably the most widely used) South Bridge SATA chip set. This chip set has been on the market for over 2 years. What gives?
I had tremendous hopes of utilizing the Xandros Server package in all future server integrations however it has become painfully obvious that Xandros only gives lip service to being a premier linux OS and has no intention of actually backing up their claims. How does an OS made available today fail to recognize the fact that SATA is not only here to stay but is the much preferred high performance drive interface over the antiquated IDE predecessor?
I have been able to find nothing which suggests that this trend is going to change any time soon at the Xandros camp.
I too would like to know how to get my money back for such an inferior product when compared to the alternatives.... i.e. Red Hat, etc. |

Xandros support finally informed me Friday that IF I purchased Xandros Server from their online store they would consider refunding my purchase price.
Unfortunately I was stupid enough to buy it from Amazon.com.
Sounds like our setups are very similar. From the start (nearly 30 days ago) I've insisted there CD was having trouble with my ICH8R and SATA controller. Friday along with the ersatz refund offer came a suggestion that I change out my LCD monitor for an older CRT. ??? That and could I please copy the boot image to a USB flash drive and try booting from that!!
Looks like I'm stuck with a product that won't work for me. What's more I can't in good conscience sell to someone else.
Xandros reluctance/unwillingness to authorize a return is due:
Their hope that I will continue doing free beta testing an their product OR
our experience is not unique.
How many of us are their?
